Opinion of the United States?

Postby Anthoniland » Tue Oct 25, 2011 10:58 pm

What is your opinion on the United States? I am an America but I believe that a lot of improvements need to be made to this country to get it up to speed with Canada and our European counter parts.

I live in New Mexico which is made up of galleries and fast food, so I can't say I give a damn about the United States.

What is it with all these "your opinion on...." threads lately?

But anyway, the USA is a damn good country and in my opinion, the second best in the world.

After South Africa of course.

Like every country has a mixture of good and bad traits. Rating them is ridiculous IMHO.

It looks to be making a slow but forceful push into police state territory.

Decent country. Our egos can be quite large, though. Education is quite undervalued in the eyes of the young... We're probably going to end up like Portugal soon; generation of unskilled labor that cannot fit the criteria needed for the jobs offered.

Also dislike the importance of religion in politics... If you aren't a Christian, you're pretty much screwed.

Last thing I dislike is that our nation is ruled generally by Corporatism, not Capitalism.

I agree, the Soviet Union epitomized capitalism.

I mean, USSR? What's more capitalist than that? Four capitals, all in a row!

I tend to agree with you, but if you are in support of the ANC and specifically Julius Malema, and supports him being our next president, then we will be one of the worst countries on the face of the earth. The ANC has been long in power now, we need change now.

I love my country very much, however, I admit, I do sometimes wish we could be more like Europeans in some ways. I like the way Europeans don't go on and on about their religious beliefs; they keep them private (if I can be excused for overgeneralizing). And I hate the way Americans are so uptight about the body, and sexuality; the European attitude is healthier. We also make too big a deal about drinking alcoholic beverages in this country. I think we wouldn't have so many problems with drinking if we didn't moralize and obsess over it so much.

Depends what you mean by European of course, in Scotland I could still tell you that some people are entirely body obsessed (though you may be meaning that in another sense). There is no European drinking attitude as well I might add, you get the drinking attitude of the north - such as the Scandinavians, Scotland and Russia - and you get the more meditteranean style of light drinking with dinner. The northern attitude is fairly unhealthy I'd have to fancy, anyone who sees a Scottish person or Norwegian go on holiday to where the drink is well and truly cheap will be able to attest that we drink till we're dead.

America was that great hope in the world, that pinnacle of freedom and democracy in a world largely composed of royalist absolutism or monopolistic government companies that, if they put their mind to it, could run the world. Kind of disappointed with the way the US has gone but humanity isn't perfect so it's perfectly understandable that developments in America have went as they did.

OP, if one's parents were to have taken part in a war that ended in victory for the parents' side, but left the nation in ruin, just before the child was born, but the child were to, without a doubt to any outside observer, suffer due to the results of the war, would by your reasoning the child be allowed to feel pride in winning a war of which the ill effects were clearly felt?

Not a country I would live in, although many countries rank definitely lower in my personal ranking. Lots of good things about it, lots of bad things about it: I just don't love the overall impostation thereof.

I have a mixed view of the US. On one hand, the US is fantastic. Without it, my country would never have went through the economic boom it went through in the 1990's and early 21st century.

On the other hand, I don't care for the international police title the US aspires to.

Our politicains are a generation behind in social issues. There is too much bickering in government, which prevents anything from getting done. There is also too much of a focus on racial identity, which only serves to seperate us as a nation.

Basic principles are pretty solid though. The Constitution is still upheld very well. America can get back on track, but it has to let the old generation of stubborn closeted bigots die out before that can happen.

Usually great people, not too many zealots, (religious or atheistic,) great cultural diversity, but has a political system that's just completely fucked up and decrepit.

Name 10 great Americans that are still alive (you should be able to do this in under a minute)
Now name 10 great American politicians that are still in power

See my point?

I also dislike the Corporatist and World Police aspects, and I think most Americans hate these aspects as well. And the two party system is crap, and the electoral college is a complete, total and utter failure.

America is a great case of good people stuck with a shitty government that they don't understand. Hence the protests.

I am a proud American, and very patriotic, but we could make some improvements around here. Not because we need to be more like Canada or France or wherever, but because we really just need to improve ourselves some, period.

Seconded. The problems can be fixed, and it's still a great country. I'm not European, I'm not Canadian, and to be honest I don't want to be. I just want to improve what I've got.
