Thank you Reagan. You took the only Nicaraguan government faithful to its people and smashed it because it toppled the American supported Somoza government, responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of people, including Americans, and stealing billions of dollars from the US to create the most potent fighting force in Central America, which took the will of an entire people and the lives of about 100,000 to defeat.
The remaining hard-line Guardsmen would continue to fight for another 10 years, claiming another 50,000 lives, destroying all infrastructure and economy, and while the new government had to put its few resources it had (which still were channeled to the poor even in the face of an American embargo) to fight off a professional guerrilla force. The Reagen administration threatened that, if in the 1990 elections, if the Sandinistas won the presidential vote, it would mean the end of Nicaragua and no end to the Contra War.
