Thank you Reagan. You took the only Nicaraguan government faithful to its people and smashed it because it toppled the American supported Somoza government, responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of people, including Americans, and stealing billions of dollars from the US to create the most potent fighting force in Central America, which took the will of an entire people and the lives of about 100,000 to defeat.

The remaining hard-line Guardsmen would continue to fight for another 10 years, claiming another 50,000 lives, destroying all infrastructure and economy, and while the new government had to put its few resources it had (which still were channeled to the poor even in the face of an American embargo) to fight off a professional guerrilla force. The Reagen administration threatened that, if in the 1990 elections, if the Sandinistas won the presidential vote, it would mean the end of Nicaragua and no end to the Contra War.

Thank you so much, Mr. Reagen. Sincerely.

Great comment. not too many americans know anything about this.
A great book on this is "The School of the Americas" buy Lesley Gill from Duke University press.

Sounds like an interesting read. I'll get into that.

And I agree, most people don't know about this. In fact I'm sure most here can't even point on Nicaragua on a map. Unfortunately for me though, Reagen's foreign policies affected me first hand, and I can tell you personally how horrible it all was, and how people never returned from their trips to the countryside to visit their families. How their bodies were found, women raped, men castrated, with their tongues cut out.

I'm glad he got Alzheimer's. I could imagine how innocent the man must have seemed not being able to remember anything.

I never knew horor like that, i'm sorry you had to go threw it. I've been to Ft. Jenning Ga. to protest The SOA (School of Americas). I've been arrested there. I'm Native american & have my share of presidents that have commited crimes of hummanity on my people. Most of them are glorified on the american dollar bills. "Savador" is a very good movie on this as well, but if you've lived it, I doubt you would want to see it. However I think its good to know that that movie has shed some light (to americans in the US) on what happened.

I feel for you. I understand not anywhere near all Americans are like this, but the leadership has and always will be imperialist. They do everything which maximized profits, which can be evidences to how even when the Cherokee (reference to your flag, I know some American history) conformed completely to their ways, they still drove them out of their land... The trail of Tears as if my memory serves me correctly. The Cherokee dropped their "barbaric ways" to fit in the eyes of the yanquis, but of course they didn't expect this to happen and all in all they just wanted the land.

Most people seem so blissfully unaware of the blood shed by their free country. Sure, Americans may be free, but it has always been at the cost of everyone else.

Why is this in Forum 7 instead of General? Just curious.

And I think Neo-Erusea talking about actual real-life experience has made a lot of right-wingers ashamed to post.

But the thing is, Reagan actually died in 81, but the administration didn't want to look vulnerable to the Russians, so they used an lookalike actor to act as President. Can you believe that? For eight years there was just some actor as President...

I think the we (americans) just think we are free. I agree it's better than most of the world, as far as civil liberties & standard of living, but when push comes to shove, they will put us down. Look at Malcom X, Martin Luther King, & the Kennedys. It was Frederick Douglass (early, 1800's civil rights leader) that said....
"If there is no struggle there is no progress.....This struggle maybe a moral one, or it maybe a physical one, and it maybe both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without demand. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be inposed upon them, and these will continue till (untill) they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both."
I believe those words are as true today as any point in history.

When I made the poll, I though of only how the american left poked fun at him & the right wingers worshiped him. I never thought of a Latin American point of view. I guess I show my age, but I'm glad you have took time to voice your views, they're important & I've enjoyed your imput thus far. :)

Thank you. :)

Well, it's life really. Its weird and so strange how everything is intertwined and how different something for one person can be for another.

I know many right-wingers who hold Reagan as some sort of God.

Many have heard of the "Iran-Contra Scandal" which to me sounds like a major downplaying of what Reagen did. Sounds almost harmless, doesn't it? Just a little "scandal" like Nixon stealing those tapes.

He was an actor. Not a very good president but not the worst. The way he got into office was pretty scandalous. I'm sure deep down he was a good person and did what he thought was right.

I did not answer your poll i don't think the answers fit my views. How about: He was an average or slightly below average president and an average actor?

His policies I disagree with.

Wow. Oliver North.

If you want to put it in a way for everyone to relate to, Oliver North is to Nicaragua as Osama bin Ladin is to the United States.
