I'll drink to that.

I'm drinking to that.

And am thus superior.

And thus God Save the Queen > Star Spangled Banner.

=p

Really?

I don't mean to country-bash here, but God Save the Queen sounds like something that should be played at a funeral parlor, the tune of it is so monotonous and depressing.

I was being only half serious.

I like God Save the Queen, easy to remember, easy to sing, great to hear 90,000 of your fellow Brits belting it out at Wembley or Twickenham. Suitably patriotic.

I think Flower of Scotland is the best of the British anthems when it comes to stadium songs. God Save the Queen is better overall, though, I think - more regal and, well, classy.

Or frightening.
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

True that. It probably is one of the easiest anthems to sing. Unlike the South African anthem - Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika which is so damn confusing. It's sung in five different languages and although I can sing all of it, I can only understand the parts that are in Afrikaans, Zulu and English. I prefer our old anthem, Die Stem van Suid Afrika.

Star Spangled Banner, just because it's to the tune of an old drinking song everyone's forgotten about now.

Also, it's beautiful when it's only done instrumentally.

National anthems are meant to be sung.

America the Beautiful. It's got three verses: one about nature, one about wartime struggle, and one about patriotic idealism - something for everyone, there. It is far, far easier to sing than the Star Spangled Banner, and I personally find its lyrics much more emotionally powerful: "Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears. America, America, God shed His grace on thee! Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law." Fabulous lyrics, music that anyone can sing, and a political message that spans partisan divides - in my view, America the Beautiful is a perfect national anthem.

I like "Star Spangled Banner" because "God save the Queen" seems really slow and not really inspirational, while the American National Anthem's second verse is really inspirational, almost as inspirational as the first verse.
