'Star Spangled Banner' or 'God Save the Queen'?

Postby Oterro » Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:00 pm

So, the national anthem of the UK or the US? Try to put aside all your inherent loyalty to your states, here :d

(All rise)
Oh say can you see...
Nope I'm not saying the first line.

As a Briton, I'd say the Star Spangled Banner is much better. God Save the Queen sounds dirgy and pretty fucking dire. Also I don't care for lizzy :/

Although, I think the ruined American national anthem is vastly inferior to the British. iknowitsnotthesamemusicalarrangementshutupitsgreat

Do you prefer the lyrics of one to the other? Is one more tuneful?

The Star Spangled Banner, at least vocally, always sounds terrible. ):

IMO Star spangled banner is far superior as a national anthem.
Why?
Because God Save the Queen is barely a national anthem. It isnt even about the nation as a whole, its about an old woman who has as much to do with the average brits life as my loo roll has to do with TES5 Skyrim.

A far, far, FAR more appropriate anthem for the british nation would be Rule Britannia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XPHL4Q86t4

It actually refers to the british people more than asking god if the queen will be nice to us, has glorious messages to it "Britons never will be slaves" and massively refers to the history of the british people in forging an empire, rather than the history of a german family...

Im not exactly a patriotic man, preferring the internationale as an anthem, however if your going to have a national anthem, AT LEAST let it be a NATIONAL anthem.

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

I always like the Star Spangled banner more.
Especially when in guitar version.

pretty sure the star spangled banner isn't about a nation either, being about some sitting watching british ships shoot at his shit and looking at his flag but maybe the glorious america stuff is in one of the verses no one remembers

God Save Our Queen sounds to me like a Christmas carol.

And putting my American patriotism aside, the American National Anthem is better.

God Save the Queen; hands down. It may just be my Monarchist sympathies; or the fact that TSSB sounds foul whenever sung (save for a few exceptions).

Or Rule Britannia or Land of Hope and Glory would be better. But God Save the Queen is better than that damned yankee rebel song because i don't like the music of The Star Spangled Banner.

The Star Spangled Banner is dramatic, but utterly unsingable by untrained voices. Either America the Beautiful or God Bless America would be a superior choice. God Save the Queen is okay, I guess.

I have a soft spot for O Canada as national anthems go.

Yeah, I don't really like the SSSB sung, but I love when it is done purely by instruments.

God Save the Queen, quite comfortably. Although I would prefer I Vow To Thee, My Country to be the national anthem and GSTQ as the royal anthem, like what many (if not most) monarchies have.

My main peeve about the American anthem is the last syllable at the end of the lines- as in "What so proudly we watched, at the twilight's last glea-ming". It just sounds tacked on, as though it shouldn't be there. Also a special mention for O Canada and Hatikva.

I prefer Stars and Stripes Forever. It's upbeat and is awesome. It's way better than The Star Spangled Banner. I don't care if Stars and Stripes Forever doesn't have any lyrics, it's sounds awesome.

Personally, my favorite version of Star Spangled Banner has to either be the guitar solo version my old band did or the one I sang at a baseball game when I was 10.
I'm BACK after a long absence! New sig to come.

Another British patriotic song such as Jerusalem or Rule Britannia.

'God Save the Queen' is too royalist (not that I'm particularly republican..), it sounds so depressing in its tune, its unedited lyrics are offensive to its own people (Scotland) and we also share it with Lichtenstein...

C.O.A's National Anthem
Once in Southern-island fought
in the far-away steppes of Lament
a brave C.O.A Battalion
was singing a song about the Devil
Once was thrown to East, then West
we stood everywhere as rocks
and the swamps of blod and Tsherkasy
we can never forget
Once the time forgets all the valiants
and levels the battlefields
and about the soldier of the death's head
only the wind will still tell.
There is no road back for us
though ruin is in the front of eyes
For free home it wouldn't be much
even if the last of us will die

Refrain:
Assault in the steel of arms, in the fire,
the Devils laugh sounds in the flames - ha-ha-haa!
The radicle of freedom springs up
these ranks will not be broken
who give everything for C.O.A.

It depends on its use but if you give me God save the Queen for formal occasions and Jerusalem for everything else I will be happy.

Britain also has nothing to do with Jerusalem other than that we gave half of it to Israel, but that doesn't stop it being a great patriotic song! :D

Well, we didn't. The Partition Plan made Jerusalem a corpus separatum, and it was the UN's doing anyway, so slight nitpick. But we did govern it for 25 years or so, so there is a connection.
