Or who gets a promotion to game mod?

Actually no, the Mod Olympics don't (usually) count the actions of the Forum Mods.

Are you sure, Nerv? Are you really, really sure? Have you had every one of these "facts" confirmed by three independent outside sources?

I hereby declare that my IRC comments about crocheting everybody beanies were just a passing bitter reference to my RL plight: owing to a time-distorting glitch, my trusty laptop and I are stuck aboard a 19th Century whaler and I'm no good at scrimshaw.

Sheariliik wrote:been procrastinating on making this post

Ive wondered why are you mods "moderators" for a while did you volunteer or did you help build NS?

Well, in my case, a long, long time ago in a forum far away....

It was mid-2003, and shortly after I'd started playing, the lawless wastelands of the sometimes-functional forums were finally being taken back by the first group of moderators that were appointed by the Powers That Be. Of those original few, only Melkor remains as a mod- the others from that first group have retired. Basically, I got a message asking if I wanted the forum mod position, and foolishly said, "Sure, why not?" Apparently I had displayed qualities that were thought well-suited to the moderation role. ("Being objective and unbiased" and "not afraid to be a complete and total bitch when necessary" being the big ones, I think. Mods had to be really mean back then because we were such a new thing and a lot of people didn't like suddenly having the rules actually enforced after 6 months of virtually unmoderated chaos.)

One thing rapidly led to another, and on May 15, 2003 (I started playing March 23, 2003) I got the keys to the game mod centre. Shortly thereafter Max also foisted forum admin responsibilities on me (so that we wouldn't have to drive [violet] up the wall to do mundane forum tasks like giving newly-selected forum mods their magical powers.) Back on the pre-Jolt forums, like [violet] I had a "special" non-nation forum account, [reploidproductions] (complete with the orange username in the users online list!) Then the forums moved to Jolt and they wouldn't give me admin powers which made getting new forum mods modded a pain in the ass because we had to go pester [violet] to do it. So while I still had the "zOMG ADMIN BRACKETS!" account, it couldn't really do anything special. Once we got the current forum up and running, I was able to resume those duties, albeit with my regular nation account instead of a special one just for that purpose.

... Over 8 years later, here I am. ;) I think at this point the only moderator to serve in the role longer than me is Melkor. Possibly the greatest possible example ever of "You know you play Nationstates too much when...." :lol2:

It's quite easy to explain, really.

In the beginning Max created the game and the forums.

Now the forums were formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the code, and the Spirit of Max was hovering over the coding.

And Max said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Max saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Max called the light “RP forums,” and the darkness he called “NSG.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day of the forums.

And Max said, “Let there be a vault between the forums to separate RP from RP.”

So Max made the vault and separated forumside RP from the gameside RP. And it was so.

Max called the gameside RP “World Assembly.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day of the forums.

And Max said, “Let the forumside be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.

Max called the dry ground “International Incidents,” and the gathered waters he called “NationStates.” And Max saw that it was good.

Then Max said, “Let the forums produce threads: seed-bearing themes and OPs on the forums that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.

The forums produced threads: themes bearing seed according to their kinds and OPs bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And Max saw that it was good.

And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day of the forums.

And Max said, “Let there be admins in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,

and let there be admins in the vault of the sky to give light on the game code and the forums.” And it was so.

Max made two great lights—the light of the game admins to govern the game code and the light of forum admins to govern the forums. He also made the technical admin.

Max set them in the vault o'er the forums to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And Max saw that it was good.

And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day of the forums.

And Max said, “Let the RP forums teem with living creatures, and let players fly across the subforums and across the vault of the sky.”

So Max created the great nations of the RP forums and every living thing with which the fora teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every nation according to its kind. And Max saw that it was good.

Max blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the nations increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

And Max said, “Let the OOC forums produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.

Max made the wild animals of NSG according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And Max saw that it was good.

Then Max said, “Let us make the mods in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the nations of the RP forums and the over the livestock and all the wild animals of NSG, and over all the players that move along the forum.”

So Max created the mods in his own image,
in the image of Max he created them;
male and female he created them.

Max blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the forums and subdue them. Rule over the RP forums of II and NS and over every living creature that moves through NSG.”

Then Max said, “I give you every moderation tool on the face of the forums and every banhammer that I hath created. They will be yours to wield.

And to all the beasts of the forums and all the nations that stay gameside and yeah, even all the creatures of NS Sports —everything that has the breath of life in it—I give unto thee.” And it was so.

Max saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day of the forums.

Thus the game and the forums were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day Max had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work, and decided that from henceforth, it was up to the mods to keep order, even unto the end of time.

The Church of Reppy is probably heterodox rather than actively heathen.
