NS2

Postby Seraosha » Fri May 01, 2009 2:00 pm

So, just out of interest, what exactly did happen with NationStates 2, Jolt and Omac and whatever? I only just returned to the game after a long, long absence in the last week or so, discovered that NS2 existed and then became vaguely aware that a few bad things have gone on. Will someone share the goss?

tl;dr version - last year OMAC bought Jolt. They contracted with Max to do NS2. They phailed, and Max bailed.

And NS is now free from (almost) all things OMAC/Jolt! We still have their forums, but I hope I never have to post there again!

Yeah, that pretty much covers it. Along with the fact NS2 wasn't built to what Max specified in the original design document, the dev team seems deaf to feedback, they went ahead and started the open beta despite all of us in the closed beta telling them "Don't do it, it's not remotely ready!"... Not to mention the ongoing issues with Jolt's forum not working properly with NS, causing all those email verification failure problems that have never been addressed, and having to pull teeth to try and get the Jolt forum admins to update our mod stuffs whenever we add/retire any of the mods.

...... Yeah, I really don't like Jolt, and you have no idea how badly I'm hoping this forum proves viable under load. The sooner we can GTFO Jolt, the better, if y'ask me.

I really like these forums!

If only there were page breakers and a quick reply box.

Anyways everybody here is less bitter.... I wonder why? :D

phpBB has quick reply boxes, but the Mods would need to activate that feature.

NS2 seemed cool, but was just too damn buggy and slow. I grew tired of all the errors.

Forum 7 predates Jolt.

Maybe we can crash this server like we did with the old one, prompting the move to Jolt in the first place.

Oh, I didn't knew NationStates 1 and 2 aren't related anymore.

http://www.nationstates.net/page=news/2009/02/25/index.html#rebirth

I tried NS2, but it was too much "extras for cash" for my liking. Also, I apparentely wasn't good in improving those little graphs.

Well, at first I was okay with NS2, it was like if Nationstates and Cybernations had mutant sex babies...

But, you had to pay for your custom Flag....and, at first, I was okay with that, but then I got laid off, and then it made me a sad panda, :(

But, when I got Hired back, I decided not to go back, cause I could just put my Nation history in the wiki, and save money on the free NS1...

How did OMAC/Jolt fail? They've been throwing ads into spare pixel of pagespace inculding the portions of posts not occupied by text but that's just capitalism running its wonderful and mysterious course. If anyone failed it's Max. I never liked his books and NS/NS2 aren't exactly spectacular browser games because they lack original content. I could help out in that area by contributing new and original issues but I've always found that it isn't just easier to destroy rather than create, it's also much more fun.

-Not making NS2 to Max's specification- the game they created looks almost nothing like what the design document specified.
-Starting NS2 open beta despite everyone in the closed beta telling them it wasn't ready, and going ahead with it even though Max did not sign off on it, which was part of the contract.
-Completely ignoring commentary from people in the beta.
-Making things players get free in NS1 (*coughcustomflags*) a pay feature.
-Not cooperating with NS1 to get the forum to work properly with the game. To this day there are several users who cannot access the Jolt forum because Jolt's side of the system screwed up.
-Violating various other contractual obligations to Max, particularly concerning income from the game.
-Banning NS users without warning or notifying NS1 mods for saying bad things about Jolt/OMAC due to the above.

And that's the short version.

Agreed. It would be interesting to see, even if it had no chance of actually being made at the moment.

Less micromanaging of data, more politicking, pretty much. Imagine if everyone could split off from the WA and make their own alliances with proposal type stuffs and the like; alliances where an unpopular leader could be ousted, or perhaps a hostile outside group could get in and seize power of the alliance, shifting it's purpose. And war/trade status affected what issues you get and stuff. None of this micromanagement of trying to keep your people from starving because you keep getting the random issue about transportation when you need to boost your agriculture industry...

NS2 had potential, if they'd have just LISTENED to what the beta testers tell them. I think the most vexing design flaw for me (dunno if they've fixed it) is that you have to delete every TG one by one. There wasn't a checkbox thing where you could just tick them off and hit "Delete Marked" or whatnot. And with how many damn TGs you'd get sent regarding alliances, trade stuff, Jolt updates..... that's just poor interface design!
