I support capital punishment only in cases of the most vile and destructive of deliberatly perpetrated crimes against (an) induvidual(s). In most cases rape itself should not justify anything remotely resembling the death sentence. However I do beleive that tougher penalties should be instituted upon those who commit violent sex crimes and the courts should re-evaluate their definition of sex crime.

If the prisons in West Europe and offshoots (sorry Americans :P) were lower quality, we could avoid these death penalty arguments. :D

Seriously, when a person is raped, emotionally, their life as they knew it is over. For children, it's 10x worse.

I have a "creative" solution to this problem:
I personally believe the governments of the world should construct two islands in the middle of the Atlantic (so one couldn't swim or use a primitive boat to float away): one for male rapists, and one for female rapists (before commenting, think statutory rape) (the segregation is to prevent procreation (many psychologists think being a rapist is a hereditary thing (nested parentheses!))). When there are enough rapists convicted to fill a plane, we drop them onto their respective island. These islands are not provided with food, water, shelter, nothing. If they all starve, great, if they set up a self-sufficient society, great.

If you think that's the craziest and most stupid solution yet, don't worry, that means it'll be the next thing Congress passes (along with a law allowing animals to sue). :P

Absolutely not. Even if I did support the death penalty, I certainly would not support it for anything short of outright murder. Being that I don't support the death penalty at all, I could not justify it for a crime like rape, which covers a whole range of offences, some brutal and horrific, some far more gray.

Although, it may make the plethora of men all to eager to justify raping unconscious women for example, less inclined to do so.

yes!
and i say that because if you got a guy out there violently raping women he is not gonna change his own persona no matter what rehab he goes thru.
if you rape a kid it's not even a question. (however i don't really see a woman banging a horny 15-16 year old boy as a crime)
or throw them in prison and let GP have free range with them.

You can't rehab rapists period. i don't care what you say or how you say you can do it. it can't be done. chemical or physical castration is the only other method.

Anyone who doesn't support the death penalty must enjoy letting these moronic inmates live off our tax dollars.

Some prisons are better than some homes where people struggle to make ends meet.

Eye for an eye.

Rape deserves Castration and 40+ years. Murder deserves instant Death Penalty.

It's quite expensive to implement the death penalty too. And hundreds of the convicted have been on death row for years, aka, living off the government.

Exactly. The death Penalty is much cheaper than letting the inmateslive off the government for 40 years...

And I said instant death penalty. No set date.

Ah well, the Death penalty AFTER their appeal, no longer than a year. Everyone has a right to fair trial so, let them appeal. If they lost eh appeal, kill em in no longer than a week.

Yes because killing one hundred innocent people is preferable to letting one guilty person live. Some people have to file several appeals before they can prove their innocence. Things change often, new types of evidence can be admisable, new witnesses materialize, etc. Better to just lock them away for life.

Also, about the topic of rapists needing appeals until they die, the Law of Large Numbers dictates the more appeals they get, the more likely one will come back with an innocent verdict, truly guilty or not. It is most certainly a fallacy to say the death penalty is bad because rapists/murderers need virtually unlimited appeals to prove their innocence.

It's not murder, true, whether you think CP is immoral or not. Murder is the intentional, unlawful killing of another human being.

However, I think he was trying to say that rapists should not be punished in a way that does not reflect the nature of their crime. Murderers are executed ("murdered" themselves), but rapists have not killed anyone. If you subscribe to the idea of "life for life, foot for foot, eye for eye and tooth for tooth"—which, by the way, is a phrase intended at at least as much to argue against unjust punishments that exceed the crime as it is to express a desire for the convicted to be properly punished—the appropriate punishment is rape of the rapist, or something else that reflects the nature of their crime (castration, maybe).

I don't, by the way, think people should give "tooth for tooth" or "life for life".

No, unless it's done as a hate crime.
Excellent Quotes:
JJ Place wrote: just because an organization tells you that them taking money from you isn't theft because they have more rights than any other organization is one of the lamest arguments a person can utilize in a debate; saying that the government can do what it likes because it writes it's own law is intellectually dishonest, and flies in the face of all reality.

Eye for an eye.

"An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind." -- Mohandas Gandhi

As for the death penalty in general, I think that the risk of executing an innocent person is too great. And I don't think that one appeal is necessarily enough (the case of al-Megrahi comes to mind -- his first appeal was rejected). Besides, the purpose of the justice system should be to rehabilitate criminals, not just to punish them.

An anecdote like that isn't really helpful, since we have no indication of whether your telling the truth or flat-out lying. An actual source would be appreciated.
