To be honest, I don't understand the whole county thing. They don't appear to do anything, and most English people I've spoken to don't really care about counties.

It's hardly "English Bullshit" when the majority of Scottish counties seem to have -shire in their name as well. :v

That's the point. Alyakia's claiming (I think) that Scottish shires/sheriffdoms/counties were traditionally referred to as 'Shire of Peebles' or simply 'Peebles', and that the adding of '-shire' or 'shire' to the end of names (hence 'Peebles-shire' or 'Perthshire') was a post-Union phenomenon that made Scotland conform to English standards (where 'Warwickshire' or 'Herefordshire' were traditional terms, and 'the County of Warwick' was a formula only used for legal or formal purposes). However, such a formula has been in use in Scotland for a very long time indeed, and saw some use before the Union.
