British Counties?

Postby Mesoland » Sun Oct 02, 2011 8:10 am

How many Americans actually realise that the UK has counties, the (sort of) equivalent of states? How many Brits acknowledge their counties as their homes, or just write them off as ceremonial crap? Does anyone actually understand the tiering systems for counties? Or the system for unitary authorities? Does anyone care about counties, or is anyone proud to be from their county?
And what county are you from?

For the curious, list of English counties on Wikipedia. Note the tiering system. What does it mean?
Scottish counties!
Welsh Counties
Counties of Northern Ireland!
Thought I'd add in the Parishes of Mann too...
And for the even more curious, list of unitary authorities

Really? I always assumed that the various countries that made up the UK were akin to more autonomous states. That's interesting though.

The counties are different to the countries.

Only English counties are included what is this tyranny.
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

I was too lazy to look for Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish counties. I'll get on to it. *plods off*

I identify with Warwickshire as my county, not 'West Midlands', a bizarre 1970s creation that applied a broad geographic term for a large part of England to a small conurbation.

Here's a map of the traditional British counties (which generally have medieval origins), before the map was revolutionised under Ted Heath, for reasons best known to him and his government.

I would assume Americans would be aware of counties what with being from a country that uses the term.

Northamptonshire here, it feels sort of normal I guess to think of the likes of Daventry as part of home (albeit a shit part, perhaps an airing cupboard) so yeah I guess I can see the logic in the division but I'd say more of a connection exist for the Midlands in general

presumably they can put two and two together but don't hold me to that

Yorkshire, largest county in England.
Second largest, North Yorkshire.
