Ted Kennedy

Postby Surote » Wed Aug 26, 2009 3:22 pm

I loved all kennedy's for what they did to this country and I also(when I get in gov't)Want to model myself after them to stand up and defend the weak and poor but I think it's sad that Ted helped the civil rights movement and stood up for the poor but noone gives a crap. But when a bleached singer dies everybody tears up.

Here's the question

Do you think Ted kennedy death is getting less attention then micheal jacksons. and why?

A true statesman like him deserves more coverage than Michael Jackson. - A shame he is not getting it.

Yes, his death is probably receiving less coverage, but that's because people aren't as interested in him.

The world has lost a fine Irishman.

But I don't think he would have wanted media attention on Michael Jackson's scale, nor anywhere near it. As Biden said, "It was never about him[self]".

People are less interested in and have shorter memories of politicians than celebrities. That's why Newt Gingrich is making a political comeback; because so many people seem to have forgotten that even the Republicans thought he was a total scumbag.

Different motivations to stay in public, one a politician the other a singer.
Regardless of what their real pasts were like these two different groups will automatically have very different reasons for becoming famous, in life or in death.

That's true; Newt Gingrich is a total scumbag. Arguably, Ted Kennedy was, too. (I don't think I need to elaborate.) I think scumbagginess is a prerequisite before going into politics.

Assassinated or getting disintegrated in a basically early ASM fuckup? (Aphrodite project). Neither a great way to go, but you could at least say the one vaped in Aphrodite went out with a Bang... as in 25 tons of Torpex.

But Micheal Jackson freed the blacks, and was a reincarnation of Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and the future ghost of Barack Obama.

That's what the radio said about Jackson's death.

And Jesse Jackson's still forming a religion around him--or whatever he's up to these days concerning Jackson.

Ted Kennedy once said there were two kinds of laws, one for ordinary Americans and one for the high and mighty.

He was right, he used his connections to escape serious punishment after manslaughtering Mary-Jo Kopechne. He was speeding, drunk, driving without a valid license, fled the scene of the accident and somehow got away with a suspended sentence? Indeed, one law for the ordinary American, and one for the high and mighty like Ted Kennedy.

Oh, and who can forget that show he put on with that neck brace.

Fortunately, 'Chappaquiddick' spared us a Teddy K. presidency. The law of unintended good consequences to bad situations at work there.

Kennedy also participated in one of the greatest smear jobs of all time, the confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas, which (led by Kennedy) the democrats turned into a partisan bash-fest no confirmation hearing before or since ever was.

I shan't miss the scumbag.

Factor in drunkenness, speeding and not possessing a valid license...

Kennedy got off with a suspended sentence for leaving the scene of an accident and a temporary driver’s license suspension. This despite the inquest testimony of a police diver that Kopechne might have been rescued had help been summoned immediately. And despite the finding of the presiding judge at the inquest that there was “probable cause” for considering criminal negligence or manslaughter charges. Even a friend (Gargan) who had gone back to the scene with Kennedy recalled how Kennedy kept worrying about “how all of this was going to affect his political career“.

The rescue diver (who was called to the scene the next day) later testified at the inquest that Kopechne's body was pressed up in the car in the spot where an air bubble would have formed. He interpreted this to mean that Kopechne had survived for a while after the initial accident in the air bubble, and concluded:

“Had I received a call within five to ten minutes of the accident occurring, and was able, as I was the following morning, to be at the victim's side within twenty-five minutes of receiving the call, in such event there is a strong possibility that she would have been alive on removal from the submerged car."

Mary-Jo died because Kennedy worried about his career and was thinking of how to manage the cover-up and how to avoid prison. Mary-Jo's fate didn't concern him at all.

And that's why he was scum.

You know, I always find it funny, that the very people who rail about poor Mary Jo are the same people who, when faced with the fact that we as a government almost certainly tortured innocent people, calmly shrug their shoulders and go "so?"

It makes me think that their constant saber rattling was less born from any legitimate milk of human kindness and more partisan hackery. It makes them...oh, what's the term I'm looking for...oh, right. Liars.

I can't speak for the liars and hypocrites in this thread, but I'm against government torture.

I assume that you vehemently oppose government torture and what Ted Kennedy did to poor Mary Jo in the name of consistency, too. Right?

The liar part comes in when you equate the two. Government torture and DUI manslaughter are not equivalent. So even though we can condemn both, to put them on the same level in the same context is just bullshit.
