Hasn't been De Facto Georgian Territory since... decades. Stalin withdrew a part of South Ossetia's Autonomy, to give it to his native Georgia. And Abkhazia was its own SSR, but it was Stalin who made Abkhazia semi-autonomous, placing them under Georgian jurisdiction. Same with Nagorno-Karabakh, which wanted to be with Armenia, but Stalin made it part of Azerbaijan. He also deported the Chechens, for burning his home city of Gori.
Also, Russians may have overreacted, but if they didn't respond, you'd have civilians casualties in the thousands, and the entire region might have been destabilized.

...well... actually the claims of RoC extend on more than just mainland China.

they want to rule also all of Mongolia, some bits of Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistand, India, Myanmar and Russia.
Basically they're a free-market version of Best Korea as for nuttiness. Maybe I'll start calling them "Best China".
