More Cucumber News: Nessie on Google Earth

Postby Hairless Kitten II » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:36 am

Image

The image, which can be seen on the satellite mapping program, depicts a large object resembling a sea creature clearly visible beneath the surface of the water.
Jason Cooke told The Sun he spotted "Nessie" while browsing the website's satellite photos. Mr Cooke, 25, of Nottingham, said: "I couldn't believe it. It's just like the descriptions of Nessie."

Researcher Adrian Shine, of the Loch Ness Project, told the newspaper: "This is really intriguing. It needs further study." The image can be seen by entering coordinates Latitude 57°12'52.13"N, Longitude 4°34'14.16"W in Google Earth.
Earlier this year it was reported that climate change may have killed the Loch Ness Monster. There have been "no "credible sightings" of Nessie for over a year.

Veteran American monster hunter Bob Rines thinks environmental conditions in the Highland loch have changed and can no longer sustain the elusive reptile.
Gary Campbell, of the monster's official fan club, said: "I'm concerned. There have been none of the normal sightings that verify that Nessie and her family are still alive and well."
The animal was first brought to the world's attention in 1933. Since then there have been dozens of sightings, many of which have turned out to be hoaxes.
There have also been a number of searches for the creature. The most recent was in 2008 when scientists used sonar and underwater cameras in an attempt to find the animal.

Have there ever been any "credible sightings"?

So there have been "sightings" for the last 1500 years, give or take a few, but no one has ever found a bone, a scrap of flesh, a tooth, nothing? I love it when new creatures are discovered but grainy photos and legends aren't proof. Show me the body.

It's a freshwater lake. I'd be shocked if the damn thing was empty. Fish =/= Nessie

There's actually a distinct shortage (i.e. as far as I'm aware, none) of "sighting" reports from the centuries between that first one -- which was from a period when we also have stories of dragons, miracle-working saints, spell-casting sorcerors & sorceresses, and so on -- and the 1920s.
The start of "sightings" in the 1920s coincided with a year when there's definite evidence for a number of large sturgeon making their way as far west as Britain (one was actually caught by an angler, several miles upstream from the sea, in Wales), which is an unusual occurrence, and sturgeon don't look much like any species that would normally be found in these waters, so that could well the source of those stories.
The image to the left of the boat, in the photo supplied by the OP, is probably just a fallen pine tree that's floating just below the surface of the loch... which is a proven phenomenon there.

And anybody wanting to suggest that there's some kind of 'prehistoric' survival living in Loch Ness needs to explain _
(a) How long-lived it's supposed to be, given that (as far as I know) nobody's ever reported seeing more than one such creature at a time and so the presence of a viable breeding population of any hitherto-unidentified species with "Nessie"-sized adults there seems highly improbable.
(b) Where this species is supposed to have lived during the period before Loch Ness became available, because that loch was actually carved-out by a glacier during the Ice Age and has only been available as a habitat since the ice melted some 11-12 thousand years ago... and why it can't still be found there, and elsewhere, too...

Well done, Bears, especially (b). Throw in the fact that Scotland was welded to North America during the Mesozoic (assuming it's a dinosaur we're allegedly talking about) and there you have it.

I agree that conclusion-jumping definitely plays a role here. And a 2m eel, fish or seal, while perhaps "monstrous" on the scale of ordinary sizes for those animals, does not a "monster" make. Which is kind of too bad, because something new is always interesting.
