Well, New York contains the headquarters for the United Nations.

So, I'd vote for New York.

New York City, definitely. Or San Francisco. San Francisco's cool, too.

Still, though, odds of us uniting the planet for even five seconds? Unless we have some alien invaders coming down to kill us all, probably about nil.

Well, In my opinion Europe is suitable because its quite socialist on average, the Americas tend to be more capitalist (or junta led arses in the case of south america) Africa isnt stable enough (plus its really hot there xD), While I have no problem with Asia in general I dont think it would be a good idea as seen as their languages are just alien (in my opinion remember) and Australia is a former prisoner dumping ground to put it politely.

Simple question -- if the world was a single nation (heh), what city would you want to be its capital~?

My vote -- Istanbul. A place where East meets West, with Islamic-on-Christian-on-pagan histories. It's been ruled by Roman pagans, Byzantine Christians, and Turkish Muslims, and so has inherited more-or-less the culture of all three. And, Napoleon Bonaparte once said -- "If the Earth were a single state, Constantinople would be its capital."
Or maybe it's just my own personal biases that make me choose Istanbul.

My second choice would be Jerusalem -- holy to the majority of the world's population, and has been ruled by Jews, Christians, pagans, and Muslims.

So, what do you think~?

Zanarkand-err-I mean, Samarkand.

New York City deserves to be capital of the world. It beats Instanbul because NYC is a genuine cultural mix, not just Muslims and Christians bitching about control. Jerusalem fails because it caters to only the Abrahamic faiths, the least deserving of any cultures on Earth. More than that, New York actually functions as a valuable modern city, being the center of the majority of global trade, politics, and culture. the other cities mentioned by the topic starter serve no purpose besides being historical sites for over represented cults.

First choice: New York City (already financial capital. Weeeeee...)
Second choice: Rome (SPQR anybody?)
Third choice: Constantinople. Yes, Constantinople. none of this "Istanbul" nonsense.

Not really.

That statement was true 20 years ago, after the fall of the USSR. Not today.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

No offence, but I'd rather the capital of the world be in the first world...

Though again, it depends on when we establish it. I'd certainly consider some eastern European countries in 20 years or so.

You want the capital to be one of the USA's Cold War-era allies?

Though again, it depends on when we establish it. I'd certainly consider some eastern European countries in 20 years or so.

Well, considering Poland is doing pretty damn well economically, why not Warsaw?

The definition of "first world" has evolved to mean economically advanced and high HDI.

As for Poland, yeah, I did consider it. But I fucking hated Warsaw when I visited it.

Not having replaced it does not necessarily mean that the US is at Rome's level.

When Rome was around, no other power was even around at the time. Well, you did have China... But it was pretty isolationist and did not impact the World in the same way Rome did.
