Roleplaying is like changing of one's behaviour to assume a role, in character of course. It can be as simple as asking countries to set up an embassy in Factbooks and National Information to something as complex as running a currency with a realistic exchange rate system, as I did on NSWiki, which is an unofficial extension of NationStates.

it's a gameplay question, by the way.

Huzzah! Another RPer!

Sooo since he (she?) asked for the run down....

Nationstates is for handy dandy peaceful RP generally set in the modern era. Think balls, weddings, embassy openings, incest, etc. Can have a good time there.

F7 is an area of general wankage to which all that does not strike the mods as reputable is banished. Craziness and molotov cocktails ensue, and this is considered the lowest form of RP. However it can host some excellent character-based RPs from time to time.

Factbooks is fairly self-explanatory is you know what a factbook is. If you don't, its essentially a conglomeration of all your pertinent RP information on your country, its culture, its races, its shirt-wearing habits, and anything else that might be considered important. Many RPers will make a post in here for their info and link it in their sig so that when they do RPs other role-players can catch up on their backstory and figure out how to treat them in the RP. Also handy for storing long lists of battlecruisers and hiveships, if you're into Future Tech roleplaying.

Economics and Trade.... haven't really been there much myself, but essentially people selling fake goods to each other. Not my cup of tea, but if you want to join more power to you.

NS Sports is a lot of dedicated people hashing out the World Cup with their nations. Over and over. Really, that covers 99.99% of all topics in this jewel of a sub-forum.
kidding NS Sports peeps, love you!
Oh and they occasionally run some highly entertaining Olympics threads.

International Incidents forms the heart of most NS rping. We, being the internet trolls and sarcastic bastards we are, don't really like the whole "peaceful ball and crumpets and tea" style of RP. This sub-forum generally overflows with battles and apocalypses, set in anything from the swords and sandals era, to mystical magic users in a epic struggle, to modern wars where crazy amounts of men attack puny nations, to space battles set far in the future around dying stars.

In all actuality Nationstates and Forum II (which some people call International Incidents) can overlap a lot in the form of RP that takes place. I prefer Forum II, but to each their own.

Well thats all I got. Read your stickies (those topics at the top of the forum list with the funky symbols by them) and you should be golden.

One last note: BEWARE THE GODMOD

Taking control of another person's character on a role-playing forum or chatroom. Sometimes done by mistake, when a player believes another player's character was doing something they weren't. Can also be used to refer to using out-of-character knowledge (information the player has that their character shouldn't) to gain an in-character advantage, though this is more accurately described with the term metagaming.

Godmodding and godmoding are often mistaken for being the same word or concept. However, godmoding (or power gaming) is, in fact, a separate concept with its own, distinct meaning.

Hope that helps...

Don't RP. Complete waste of time. Do useful things like debate abortion and religion constantly here on NSG.

I kid, I kid. In your time off the forums, did you spend much time with the World Assembly? If so you might like to visit the General Assembly and Security Council sections of the forum, which are generally quite clique-free, and have an enjoyable sort of culture. Important threads to read first? Probably the current resolution at vote (Consular Rights) or the World Assembly Stranger's Bar. Additionally, reading the stickies at the top of the forum will help if you want to write your own proposals.

But you're probably after 'proper' RP, in which case you should see the Diplomacy section. Perhaps the two most well known sections here are Nationstates and International Incidents. Pay attention to the Mentor & Trainer Hub, where the official NS Mentors hang out. You'll see their nation names are a different shade of green to most people's. You can ask these people anything, indeed they relish the opportunity. Additionally, you may wish to talk to Jenrak who rules the II (International Incidents) roost, and is also a moderator. You should read this thread by Euroslavia, which is written for the Nationstates forum, but also applies to II, and any bits of this extremely long thread that catch your fancy.

There are, however, three other sections of the Diplomacy board. Sports can best be describes here. For Global Economics and Trade (I've always been quite scared of this section, but then I tend to the communist side of the economic spectrum, so it's probably natural) read this. Or rather, read the links. Additionally, as an example of superb storefronting, I'd recommend this. The final branch of Diplomacy is Factbooks and National Information. Not much actual RP takes place here, but if you're trying to produce an extremely detailed and realistic nation, as indeed you should be, making a factbook can be an effective way of solidifying ideas. Additionally, the other threads in this section may help you to think of details about your nation that you'd never have thought about before.

The final, lesser known RP section is Forum Seven, AKA F7, AKA The Great Hellhole. This place is not for RP related to your nation, but other RP's, usually character RP, and also a few RP's based on alternative timelines on Earth. The Hitchhiker's Guide will tell you more. While not really 'proper' RP, there is plenty of room to practice with other people here.

Woah. That was long. You probably don't have to read all of that. I think I might bookmark this thread, and if anyone else turns up asking for help, they're gonna get this, because I'm sure as hell not re-writing this. Whatever you do, stick around General as well, because, well, we have the best people. Good luck with your RP'ing, and if you ever see a groundskeeper with OGD (Obsessive Gravedigging Disordee), send him round to me. He's called Arnold, and he's probably lost. Additionally, read the stickies. I've posted most of them here, but read all of them anyway. It's sometimes quite fun.

Ah, and Sparrow, here are your examples for what godmodding is and what godmod is. Subtle differences, but appreciable.

This is your godmodding noob.

See what I did there? The player who is godmodding TOLD the other player what happened to his forces, a major error in NS role-playing. Instead, say what your forces do, and let the other player RP their own damage. Good players will do this, and therefore as a rule of thumb always let the other RPers decide everything that happens to their own forces. In some roleplays players will allow others to do things to their forces for the purpose of plot development or the storyline, but ALWAYS ask before you do this.

And now, the godmod (derived from the term god-mode, where a player is invincible.)

This is the godmod I warned you about. Some low class players will deploy ridiculously overpowered forces or simply refuse to acknowledge any damage to their forces. The proper response to this is to TG the player about their error and ask them to correct it, and if they do not....

FIRE THE IGNORE CANNON!

In contrast, a good, proper player would write like this:

Normal Player wrote:The Third Tank Company move forward to assault the n00b's defensive fortifications.

Mr Professional wrote:The Commander took a last puff on his cigar, before throwing it away and turning to his men.
"We will defend! Down to the last man, we will defend our home, our lives, our freedom! Man the turrets!"

Here the player is describing the scene, and trying to describe the emotions of the soldiers. In actual fact, this might include a description of the desolate plains surrounding the battle, or a perspective from one of the soldiers, nervous but filled with anticipation. But I don't want to bore you. I was just showing that not everything has to be set out in simple battle commands.
Normal Player wrote:The Third Tank Force assaults n00b's defensive position at full strength.

Mr Professional wrote:The initial onslaught was vicious. However, the general's men fought bravely. The gunners, highly trained, and filled with experience, were extremely accurate. The gates held, but just.

Notice here how I've described the attacks I am giving, but I haven't actually stated that any of their soldiers have been killed? It is assumed, and any other playee worth their salt will assume that they have taken damage from this, but it is important that I make sure that the other person decides on the losses.

Mr Professional wrote:The General's forces had sustained heavy losses, and, as the day drew to a close, and the armies withdraw for nightfall, it was clear that this was a last ditch attempt. Sadly, the general gave the order for the non-fighting people to be evacuated. He and the rest of his men would fight to their deaths here.

What have I done here? I've actually sustained heavy losses and said effectively that I'm dead?! What is this? Actually, this is a far more interesting form of roleplay than just trying to win. So, this outpost might fall. I might lose a really important colony. Some people might even, under extremely careful agreement, decide that the other person is able to beat them, and make their country part of an empire. They might then, a few (in-character) years later, attempt to create a revolution to claim back their country. While this is an extreme example, being able to accept losses is far more fun in the long term.

Why hello there!

Ah, and Sparrow, here are your examples for what godmodding is and what godmod is. Subtle differences, but appreciable.

This is your godmodding noob.

Normal Player wrote:The Third Tank Company move forward to assault the n00b's defensive fortifications.

Normal Player wrote:The Third Tank Force assaults n00b's defensive position at full strength.

n00bzrule1!!11!! wrote:My forces fire the GIGALAZER at your forces, a beam of light 300,000 km wide.
OOC: die!!!!1!11!

or

n00bzrule1!!11!! wrote:My men are all wearing personal energy shields, and therefore the explosions of your tank shells do nothing to them.
OOC: you can't hit me nanananana

This is the godmod I warned you about. Some low class players will deploy ridiculously overpowered forces or simply refuse to acknowledge any damage to their forces. The proper response to this is to TG the player about their error and ask them to correct it, and if they do not....

FIRE THE IGNORE CANNON!

Run now> Run hard, run long, and preferably not in a circle; never look back not even for a moment.

It's your only hope.
