NSG and your Day Job

Postby Frenequesta » Mon Sep 05, 2011 12:06 pm

I enjoy reading the forums and commenting on it for its own sake, however, some others seem to believe that all things being done must serve another end, with NSG being no exception. So I want to ask, how has NSG (or NationStates in general) helped you gain real-world skills, and how does it relate to your day job if you have one?
I’m mostly here for... something to do, I suppose.

NSG has helped me develop my libertarian views and, subsequently, appreciate my job and its larger benefit to society.

If I hadn't joined this forum, my comprehension of economics/politics would be substantially lower than it is now, which has a direct bearing on my immediate future.

I've also had some light-hearted moments as well, and made some friends, which is very good.

I don't really subscribe to the 'everything I do must have a grander purpose, meaning, or point principle, so I don't look to NSG to do anything other than widdle some time away. However, things like generic talking points will pop up and I get to see people actually have a discussion and examine those so that the first time I'm hearing them isn't some dude parroting them in public where I have to go, "Wait, what?" and take shit a face value that shouldn't be.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

This.
Encountering a new topic in the form of a debate, rather than just passively as an article on a news site, or from some yawp flapping their head - that's what keeps me reading here every night (even though I infrequently post).
It's not a substitute for news, but it can be a great complement.

Also I have to ask: by "widdle" did you mean "whittle", or were you taking the piss?
