Questions like this are a bit more complicated than a simple yes/no answer. A lot of people can say that they would kill an intruder, others might say, "Never!". Nobody really knows for sure how they'll handle something until they are faced with that particular situation.

I would like to think that I would use every other measure available to me before killing an intruder, and ultimately, if I felt there were no other choice to preserve the safety of myself and my family, I would kill the person invading my home. In all honesty, I could end up hiding under the bed like a scared bitch until the intruder leaves, shoot the intruder on sight, or be having a bad year, chain the intruder up in my basement and torture him/her prior to dumping the eventual body.

Anything is possible.

Murder should be an absolute last resort.

He obviously has the intent to kill if someone tries to stop him thus the knife, and warning shots take time, time enough that the robber could close in on you and stab you before you could re-aim the gun. Unless you are down a long hall which is unlikely.

Why should I respect his life when the intruder doesn't respect mine? Not only did he enter my home without permission, intent on stealing everything I own, but he brought a knife into my house where my wife and kids sleep. I have to assume he knows how to use that knife and that he will, otherwise he would not have brought it with him. He could have just as easily robbed the house when no one was home to avoid confrontation. Shooting to kill is completely justifiable in this situation.

Getting shot in the leg can be fatal if you don't get urgent medical attention, especially if your using a regular home defense caliber (9mm, 45, 45 ACP, 12 guage slug/buck)

And depending on where you live, the family might not have much of a case. My neighbor laid a guy out who broke into his home 2 years ago, the family did take him to court. They got a verbal lashing from the judge and the case was dropped. One of the many benefits of living in The South.

Oh, and PSA for all of the people talking about firing warning shots: Don't do it. Those shots will end up somewhere. If you fire them into the ground they could bounce. If you fire them into the distance they could kill someone uninvolved. If you fire them into the air they will come back, possibly killing someone. The only safe place to fire a gun is into a chosen target.
