If I am alone or my family is all secure behind me, I interrupt him with my gun and flashlight (a mag lite or surefire light beam into his eyes in a darkened room generally disorients and panics a perp, shooting him if he charges me or refuses to drop the weapon and eat the floor, and if he runs then I chase till the cops get there but don't shoot. If I have family in rooms (he is in the hall and the door to my kid's room is behind him and not me, or something similar to that) that he can get to without going through me, then I probably do the same but shoot to kill if he doesn't follow my orders.

It isn't authoritarian, it's the law. You shot someone. You get slapped in handcuffs, taken down to the precinct, get your gun thrown in an evidence locker, get processed (ID'd, printed, etc.). They generally ask you to present a prelim report of what happened (ofc you answer "I'll need to talk with my lawyer/counsel" and don't tell them anything), you get to make a phone call, etc. etc.

Then you get to spend a bit of time in the jail, you know, that stuff. Then you get court dates, etc., you get to defend yourself against a jury of your peers because you know, you just shot someone.

This is how our justice system works.

It treats everyone the same. Shooters who kill people in self-defence are treated the same as stone-cold murderers.

Wouldn't have it any other way, either. It makes sure you know your laws, and you know what is legal, so you don't end up in jail.

Nah, the Renegade ending is that the Reapers try to hack into Shepard's implants, but Shepard overpowers them through sheer force of will and counter-infects the entire Reaper fleet.

No you don't get to be a "Person who uses lethal force to defend themsel[f]" because that's MY side. Your side is shooting people while they're trying to surrender. That will get you locked up and with good reason.

It largely depends. I have an abhorence towards taking a life, yet if I found that someone who was intruding into my territory was of signifigant threat to me or my fellow inhabitents of said space, I would not hesitate to inflict injury upon said intruder, but I would stop at anything fatal. Only if the threat was of such nature as to render a physical threat to aformentioned fellow inhabitents, that is, one that could reasonabley produce grevious bodily harm, would I use force that could potentially end the life of said intruder. If said intruder's threat is less than that, I would merely strike him with my blunt sword, not my sharp one. Such could potentially break bones, or even damage some organs, but is unlikely to be fatal unless I strike too hard.
