I never said anything about putting a gun down. However, I'd have to use at least one hand to operate the phone. That would make it harder to be accurate. I know some phones do require two hands to use properly, plus I would have to look away for a couple of seconds. I'm not doing that.

Any sudden movements and you'd be shot. I don't care what you say, but I would not shoot you as long as you do not pose a threat to me. If you showed even a sliver of resistence, you wouldn't even have the chance to think. But I would not shoot you if you did what I said, and that is doing what it takes to survive.

many career criminals (more often thieves than murderers) will take the time to case a house. That is to study the behavioral patterns and schedules of a family before actually breaking in and taking stuff. This means that either A: The criminal has CLEARLY overlooked the fact that I own almost a dozen firearms and an equal number of swords (most for showcase though 2 are fully functional) which i'm frequently cleaning on my back porch which is quite easy to see from the outside. The other option is B: this is not your typical career criminal, meaning theres a far greater chance they'll do something irrational if backed into a corner. This is still not a threat I want to risk dealing either. So unless I know for a fact I have a clear shot on him and he is most definitely not either of these types of threats i'm shooting to kill. If I know the crook from somewhere else and he seems like a decent person, I MIGHT just hold him at gunpoint til' law arrives though the odds of this occuring are incredibly slim as I take a rather trigger-happy stance when dealing with possible break-ins (AKA Answering the disturbance with stoeger coachgun (double barrel shotgun) in hand, a Wasr-10 (romanian cheapo AK/AKM)slung around my torso and a Taurus PT 1911 stuffed in my pants as a tertiary.)

Never assume anything about a criminal except the worst. How much are you willing to bet your life, the lives of your family, your friends, and any other innocent people in the vicinity about your assumptions?

Look at the facts. Stranger in your home (or property), currently stealing your possessions, intent unknown. Why on earth would you assume that they will just say, "Oh sorry, didn't know you were home. I'll just kindly leave. By the way, can I have your TV?" Especially when they enter your home at night where there's no reason to assume you won't be there, and especially when other people are at risk.

Again, not telling you what to do here, just saying that naivety will get you and others killed more often than not. Deal with the situation appropriately. Get your family to a designated retreat area in your home, tell them to call the cops. You, you get yourself and whoever you think ought to be able to help, get your weapons, lock the door behind you, and fuck those bastards up. If you have a large dog, they can help you tremendously. They will let you know where everyone is.

Criminals are used to cops. They're used to getting the job done before they they're halfway to arrival (be it theft or murder or rape or arson), and they're used to making sure you never get a chance to call while they're still inside. If you want to think otherwise, be my guest. Just don't force your opinions onto me under the guise and penalty of law. I decide how much my life and that of my family is worth. I decide whether or not I'm willing to let random human beings take away everything I have. You don't decide those things, not for me. You do decide them for yourself, either now, before something like this occurs, or during, through your reactions.

You have a few options here regarding this situation. You can feel unsafe or you can feel safe. You can be unsafe or you can be safe. Which will it be?

Call the police if possible, confront target with gun out and ready, tell target to throw knife to the side and get on floor. If target does as told, wait for police to arrive while keeping gun trained on target. If target runs, follow him out and put some rounds into the tires, see how far he gets. If target advances with weapon, shoot him through the center of mass until he stops advancing. If this involves unloading an entire clip into him, so be it. And be sure to employ the kind of rounds that spread out upon impact in order to cause maximum damage to the person you're actually aiming at, rather than risk sending bullets into-through-across-the-street-and-into-that-sleeping-five-year-old-girl.

Never ever approach a potentially hostile target with your gun holstered or on safety, the chance is too great he can reach you and kill you with that knife before the gun is out and ready to fire.
