I did the maternal haplogroup to prove or disprove my mother's claim of Native American descent. Then I found out they don't prove or disprove anything that was in the past because some genes can by drowned out by others (become so small over time that modern tests cannot detect them).

I was going to do a Y test but now I am waiting for the tests themselves to improve greatly. These tests, from what I researched, can only tell you what region your primary ancestors originated from but they cannot tell you your ethnicity or what ethnicities you had in your family's past.
All I can do then is guess. As I told my nephew on myspace when he posted that his mother, my sister, and the rest of our family is Mexican: that would be incorrect even based on the fact that his grandfather is 1/2 Irish based on the immigration status of his parents, one from spain and one from ireland.
You then take the grandmother's side. It's a more complex picture but appears to be 1/4 German, 1/4 Native American, 1/2 Irish. you pass that down. The daughter then becomes 1/4 spanish, 1/16 German, 1/16 German, and because both had at least half Irish, 1/2 Irish.
Now the daughter married a full blooded Native American which brings his Native American DNA up to at least half. He then becomes, half Native American, Half Irish, and the Spanish and German pretty much become so small that they are not detectable in him.

Basically I told him that because of his ancestry and his genetic makeup, he is not Mexican and he is not Latino. I think he got that idea from people going around falsely claiming that all Native Americans are Mexicans.

By "maternal halogroup" I assume you mean mitochondrial DNA. In which case, mitochondrial DNA doesn't dilute. However, it only works if it's a strictly maternal line. So for example, if your mother's father was part Native, then you wouldn't be able to get this information from your DNA.

M417- and old european - If i'm not mistaken, there is only one such entry at the FTDNA's R1a1a subclades project which enlists one "John Walker Van de Water" - so If thats not you maybe you should try contacting him.

It is me well the name is of my oldest ancestor along my Paternal line. That is always the confusing part of FTDNA's database is it lists your ancestor and not the person tested.

Autosomal DNA can help determine your overall genetic makeup but it doesn't really tell ethnicity so much as it tells you what regions your genetic markers derived from. Like myself I have majority Western European markers with a smattering of Native American, African and Middle Eastern.

Your mitochondrial DNA (mother's line) is probably more useful to know. That affects your vulnerability to diseases.

The Y chromosome is pretty much junk. It's only purpose is to create males to continue the species.

Though it is amusing when I surf through my distant matches they are all from places like Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Belorussia and Ukraine while the only Western Matches are the occasional Brit. I just accepted that I have a horrible paper trail and an obviously even worse Genetic trail so I have pretty much given up.

As far as I know, Y-DNA haplogroups are pretty useless. Since they only trace your direct patrilineal lineage, they don't tell you anything about the rest of the DNA you acquired along the way. It's not even particularly good for testing your ethnicity, as your patrilineal lineage might be a single German aberration in an otherwise purely Mongolian ancestry.
