By "no matter how far back you go", I meant in the span of Homo Sapiens existence, not to the origins of the Y-chromosome itself. Obviously there has been significant mutation of the Y-chromosome leading that far back.

Assuming a generation length of 25 years, we're talking about an ancestor who contributes on the order of one ten-thousandth of one percent of my genetic heritage.

Hold up; this changes everything for me. (I really should have recognized that in the first place.) I'm as purely British as the word "pure" can be expected to define in genetics, on my mother's side. But in my father's case, his grandfather on his father's side is German. So I might still be an R1b, but it is much more statistically probable that I am an R1a, and I can't get any more specific than that without a DNA test.

Not exactly true. My Paternal Line is Dutch but I turned out with the very rare R1a1a part of what is labeled as the Old European Branch it was some group that survived the initial colonization of Europe that was utterly disastrous and deadly for humanity for reasons we do not know.

Unsure in fact there isn't much information avaible until they find some old burial mounds or something that matches my Y-chromosome. Until then I am pretty much an enigma though with the way it is stacking so far it looks like it might possibly concentrate along the Rhine. I submitted my results to the Russian Academy of DNA Genealogy and all they could give is some guesses of where my origins come from and it varied from Proto-Germanic Tribe to some lost guy from the Russian Steppes.

Thank you my good friend. I found Genetic Testing to be both eye opening and completely disturbing as it can throw off what genealogical attempts you are making as of now I am even more lost then before since my nearest Genetic Matches are from around the 1st Century AD and two of those fellows are from the UK and one is a Southern Slav from Macedonia. Though it is amusing when I surf through my distant matches they are all from places like Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Belorussia and Ukraine while the only Western Matches are the occasional Brit. I just accepted that I have a horrible paper trail and an obviously even worse Genetic trail so I have pretty much given up.

Getting your autosomal DNA is actually much move useful as it can give you a rough and I do mean rough idea of your overall genetic makeup. It seems I have far too much Western European in me with a nice healthy dash of Native American, African and Middle Eastern genetic markers. I also found that I have a genetic susceptibility to alcoholism that could prove deadly, a more elevated risk of lung cancer and that I like most with European genetic stock can drink milk. Actually now that I think about it getting your Autosomal DNA tested might not be a good idea if you are rather fatalist as you can learn about some disturbing genetic flaws that could kill you.
