The Seatons have already sued Jewish Hospital, where the surgery took place.

Joos want to chop off your penis.
Run.

Let me get this straight though... during surgery, he found WHAT HE THOUGHT could POSSIBLY be a cancerous formation in the penis... and his immediate reaction is to perform an on-the-spot amputation? wat? I'm fairly sure that's NOT what the guy meant when he allowed the doctor to deal with "unforeseen circumstances" (assuming, like, there wasn't some cancerous tumor about to take form and brutally murder the man in the next few hours).

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Actually, during the operation, he found that the man's penis resembled a "rotten piece of cauliflower" and performed a surgical removal of the glans. It was another doctor who removed the rest of the diseased, useless limb.

The latter may not have been entirely legal.

Unless it was an immediate threat to his health, I don't think that's part of an "unforeseen circumstance" (or w/e the vague term was) covered in the contract. Most of us could probably agree that consultation would be far preferable to just deciding to remove a part of his body under some loosely interpreted line of the contract.

Does anyone know if a 64yr old male, having already been anaesthetised the day before, can be anaesthetised again a day or two after?

Surely if there's no significant increase in the risk of death, the surgeon could have had the poor guy brought around for further consultation.

This is the kind of man who's most likely to die by riding a flaming tricycle into the middle of traffic and getting run over by an 18-wheeler.

It depends. Lots of general anaesthetics have a habit of being fast to act but slow to leave your body because lots of them are very fat soluble. Basically, the more fat someone has, the longer they'll suffer ill effects post-surgery. Aside from the fact that I doubt most anaesthetists would be happy knocking someone out twice in two days, plus the inherent risks present with every new surgery, plus the fact that this guy was a big fella, means they'd probably want to avoid doing this.

Thanks for your reply. As a consequence I'd have to say, despite what I initially thought and as a fellow penis carrier, that the surgeon acted reasonably.

doesnt matter.

if he consulted a cancer specialist and that doctor agreed that the penis needed to go immediately it could have been done under a local if the risk of general anesthesia was too high.
whatever

if he consulted a cancer specialist and that doctor agreed that the penis needed to go immediately it could have been done under a local if the risk of general anesthesia was too high.

Local anaesthesia isn't some magical, risk-free procedure either; obviously the surgeon felt that general was more appropriate and the patient had agreed. Aside from anything, a nerve block for penile cancer is only really indicated in smaller lesions, particularly those confined to the prepuce and not hugely invading the glans. Excision biopsy requires a small amount of normal tissue around the margin of the lesion, and given the size of it the tissue area needed seems to have included a large portion of the glans. For the description of the lesion given by the doctor, he's performed the correct procedure. Given that the initial operation was under general anaesthesia, that the patient was having an unidentified inflamed lesion removed and that the surgeon discovered the lesion wasn't confined to the prepuce, I don't see this case as anything more than a man who's lost his penis to cancer and wishes to blame someone. What I am interested in is why the rest of the penis was removed.
