Has anyone ever read first contact by Carl Sagan? That's a really interesting and is probably about as realistic as a book about aliens can be. I haven't quite finished it but I'm like 2/3rds of the way through and there aren't even any physical aliens in it.

Then all we'll ever learn about them is what we learn from any probes they send out out or any very long range signals they can transmit. We won't be watching alien tv, after about 2 light years the signals degrade too much to be of use.

I believe someone here once mentioned a novel about just that - the aliens had discovered the (extremely simple) secret of antigravity or interstellar travel or something extremely early in their development - and never had needed the whole industrial revolution thingy.

Result: they come here to conquer earth in their ships... armed with bows and arrows. And get their arses kicked

It's a short story, and they've got WWI-era weaponry, as I recall. Unless there's two of them. Can't recall the title or the author, though.

That one is Turtledoves World War series. Similar idea, but the aliens there were still more advanced than humans - only far less than they thought.

Edit: thinking of another example - the Zerg from starcraft. Their knowledge of biology is probably vastly superior to ours - but their tech is not

What motivation would an alien race have in telling SETI that it exists? So Earth can try to nuke it, perhaps?

As for them attacking us... well, let's just say there are about a thousand exopolitics theories as to why they wouldn't; probably just as many for why they would.

There are planets within 50 light years that are as much as a billion years older than ours. If one had a fusion-powered ship (perhaps fission), it's inhabitants could make the journey from Earth (or to) in about 18 months (acceleration at 1G takes one year to reach light speed, from there the experience of time is slowed). Just throwing that out there...

That's still a very small window in the grand scape of things. About 300, maybe 400, years within our current technology amongst civilizations that could easily be millions of years older or thousands of years younger.
