Best Army in the World? Very subjective, but my vote so far goes to the US Military.

The main problem it carries is that its

A) Run by a democratic state, which makes it difficult to prolong a war when one of the main tenets of a democratic state can also hinder the progress of a war (the free media)

B) Built to fight a major power-paradigm - a performance between US and China would yield much better results than US and Iraq, for example, as the US army seems to work best when it carries defined military keypoints and objectives, not just 'War on Terror'

Well, while I would vote for the US in this case, I must say that it isn't nearly as effective or powerful as it could be. From the acquisition corruption, to the petty infighting and budget contests between the branches, to the tendency to cling to outdated or ineffective policies (Such as Generals in love with syncronization and the Air Force's love affair with interdiction missions rather than close air support), the military just doesn't seem to preform as well as it should, given the budget that it has. I can't help but wonder if other countries with far smaller military budgets are able to avoid these problems.

Well, that same press can at times be the catalyst for going to war, or the factor that sustains a country's drive to continue a war rather than pull out. It all depends on the circumstances, what is witnessed, what is reported, and how the reported events are interpreted/spun.

Personally, I don't think that there is a best army in the world. Its the strategies employed and the training and motivation of the soldiers that are important.

All-around -- considering factors like size, weapons/technology, organization, tactics, quality of training, and mobility (assuming those are some of the main factors...) -- not to be a homer, but I think the answer is the US.

An equally interesting question is this (not to hijack the thread):

What is the top special operations unit?

A few well-known examples are the British SAS, US Delta Force and French GIGN (I think that's what it's called).

The GIGN (Groupe d'Intervention de Gendarmerie Nationale) is NOT a special forces unit per se. It's a police-based counter terrorist group.

They won't be pulling out of the Middle East for a while. In short, the USA are waging wars they can't finish quickly. Korea was a military defeat, and the South Koreans appreciated what they did. In Vietnam, parts of the South did, before they were snuffed out. Iraq and Afghanistan? Look at the popular comments. They may have won militarily (not in Afghanistan), but certainly not politically.
