Offensive or a bit of fun

Postby Austronia » Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:29 am

Im talking about the new Tarantino World War II film "Inglorious Basterds". I've read the synopsis and watched the trailers and i'm going to see it soon to see what its like.

From what i've seen and read it looks very violent and could be offensive to German people. I was wondering if people thought that this film is offensive of just a bit of senseless violent fun.

Having just seen the movie with a German-American guy and Jewish Russian-American gal and having to sit through a very annoying conversation on the drive back... I have to say it isn't all that offensive. It is Tarantino, everyone knew it was going to ultra violent and, even if it has a bit of the feel of a "revenge film," it is mostly just a trip.

That and its pretty obviously fiction. Heck, it was posted as Alternative History at the science fiction blog io9.

'U-571' was offense. 'Historically inaccurate' just doesn't go far enough to describe the epic amounts of bullshit in that movie. It reminds me of that spoof in Monky Dust documenting America's vital role in the medieval crusades. :palm:

I can't stand that film. Hollywood is always changing history so that the Americans look like they won the war. For one U-571 was never captured it was sunk of the Irish coast in 1944 by Australians and secondly it was British sailors who captured the first German enigma machine, not the Americans. And lastly it potrays us Germans in a very negative light.

So really Americans had nothing to do with U-571 or the capture of the first enigma machine.

U-571 was pretty horrible in its distortion of reality and I can see how some people would think the events were at least some what based on reality. Inglorious Bastards... if anyone thinks this movie is historically accurate... then I... will be... sad. It is pretty freaking clear by the end.

Apparently people in Germany love it, actually.

It's just senseless violence. Everyone loves seeing Nazis getting shot up.

I'll see it, and then make up my mind as to weather its offensive. I'm certainly not going to trust someone just because they say its offensive- anything that involves Nazis and the Holocaust is probably going to offend somebody, especially if Tarantino is directing it.
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Just don't go into it expecting something that has any relation to historical reality.

From the commercials, it looks like he kills Hitler three or four times. Surely that's historically accurate!

If you want to talk about offensive Tarantino films, talk about From Dusk to Dawn. (okay okay, he *only* wrote it and stared in it, Robert Rodriguez directed it. But still, it was offensive to my sense of a quality movie.)

i generally find senseless violence (in and of itself) offensive, out of what i feel is a not unreasonable fear, that it makes people more willing to accept the real thing, and that IS something to worry about.

not that a little exposure to it is inevitably fatal or anything. not as long as a person is exposed to a sufficient diversity of everything else, so that they might have saner scripts for dealing with unfamiliar situations, but there are parents who seem to think it is perfectly moral to expose their kids to nothing else. and that's where it gets to be a problem.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Well, get this straight, it is NOT an action film.

It is long, drawn out periods of suspense and dialogue puntuated with breif periods of extreme violence.

The movie has almost nothing to do with the "Basterds" and everything to do with an SS Officer and a couple of unlikable and interchangable french-resistance-type women.

Still, its a good movie, I absolutely loved it, but I knew it was not an action film.

The action scenes that DID occur, were outstanding. I don't want to say anything to ruin the movie, their are some unexpected and AWESOME fight scenes, but it is not an action movie.

lol, well, through most of the movie, I mentioned that scene (just realized I spelled it wrong, :lol2: ) because it is generally regarded as the most "offensive" part, ;)

i have seen something that was funny and fun BECAUSE it was SOOOO wrong, but i think what there was in it that bothered me was not the same as what would likely bother the greatest number of other people, and that was the voyages of the good (living bug) ship LEXX.

i think it would take some pretty broad pythonesque slapstick to do the same for a war movie.

then again the marx brothers did a pretty good send up of south american dictatorships that were common, (and capitolism backed) at the time.

still, i do feel rather sceptical, the parallels between how people could have gotten conned into going along with some of the darker things that happened in that era, and many of the conditions being seen in america today.

i think if i lived anywhere else i might feel more inclined to check something like that out.
not that the war movie genre is one that particularly appeals to me.
though perhapse a well done satyre of it, who knows.

inglorious basterds is not even really a war movie. Its more like Casablanca with a few short moments of absolute violence. Its suspensive and intriguing dialogue between people in a faux WWII setting.

The action scenes are just icing on the cake. They are VERY good, even if you don't like shoot-ups, you might appreciate the ones in the movie. One of the most significant happens so fast, its over before you can even register what happens.
