BEST Film Franchise(s)?

Postby The Parkus Empire » Sat Aug 06, 2011 12:58 am

We don't need no stinkin' poll. State your reasons.

My pics.

1. The Evil Dead trilogy. Justification: while the second installment was largely a plot repeat of the first, Evil Dead 2's tone was remarkably different. There was a transition from the slight amount of tongue-and-cheek in the first film, to the laugh-out-loud humor of the second. Plus, Ash went from the regular, gee whiz horror victim to one of fiction's most memorable badasses whilst simultaneously being a dimwit in the vein of The Three Stooges. As for the third film, Army of Darkness, there was a total break in plot formula that added to the whole deal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_I2p50rb6E

2. The Dollars trilogy. Justification: Each film had a unique plot. Each film could be enjoyed on its own. This was more than just a cash cow, it was a venture that had considerable creative talent poured into each piece. This kind of passion over half-assing is rarely seen in the mainstream films of today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw8mOUEaY-k

3. The Godfather, I and II. Justification: Based of the first and second halves of a book, these films worked so well together because the second part wasn't an afterthought, it was already there. The second installment completes Michael Corleone's loss of his soul; what starts off as evil for the sake of his family becomes evil for no one's sake at all. As for Part III: I enjoyed it, but I agree with Puzo's and Coppola's assessment, in that it functions more as an epilogue than a necessary part of the story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQBW6G0hSrs

I asked that you state your reasons. IMHO, while I enjoyed the second film, I don't really see the series as worthy of being considered one of the best. The formula was essentially just repeated with different people being eaten. The first one kinda had a tense buildup for wonder and majesty, then horror followed. The others were very much the same thing, albeit without the wonder and majesty to awe the audience. Jurassic Park was a great film, but the sequel format didn't particularly add anything.

The Thin Man films - they are all pretty funny

The Bourne films - like Bond but without some of the ridiculous touches

Zatoichi - Japanese films from the 60s and 70s. Not seen a bad one yet.

Once upon a time in China - I just enjoy these enormously

Wow. I am surprised to see that referenced. Many people don't know them. I liked the earlier ones better as they changed when the director died.

They're remaking them soon. :/ I'm somewhat doubtful of the idea.

Oh they are going to stink to no end. It failed miserably when they tried a TV series.

You can't beat Myrna Loy and William Powell.

No, I really don't think you can. Heaven help us if they try to remake The Big Sleep.

I think they did in the 70s. But you are correct. Hmmmm Mark Whalberg and Julia Roberts

Monty Python.
Without a doubt the greatest movie franchise in history. No matter how many times you watch it, it still doesn't get old. Funny, clever and Monty Python's impact on cinematic comedy is just as great, if not greater, than the Beatles' impact on music.

Hm, that's right. Mitchum actually portrayed the book version of Marlowe admirably...or would have, anyway, if he were much younger.

I'm not opposed to other Marlowe adaptions, but they still need to lay off that story.

It doesn't get old, but the social references do after awhile, especially when they're forced. There are some people which I will simply never care to enjoy a coconut in the company of.

Not a fan of the other two, or do you just feel that The Godfather leaves all other sequel-format competition in the dust?
