Hat-tip to the Daily Kos: the once and (hopefully) future Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, here tearing into the absurdity that is the Republican Party on debt, deficits and their spending plans.

Frankly, I agree with just about everything she said in that 8:45 clip. The bill is absurd, it does demand huge sacrifices from the least fortunate (the elderly, Medicare recipients, children in public education, college students) whilst taking nothing from the wealthy (oil companies, the high-end income earners, megacorporation offshorers), and it won't pass in the Senate - making it a waste of time, again as Mrs. Pelosi claimed.

Whilst I think her enthusiasm for the Reid alternative (itself too far to the Right) is misguided, I'll certainly let that pass in favour of this spine she's finally willing to use when the Republicans attempt to force their extreme agenda through the House. Now, if only she'd found this spine while Bush was the President......
Fuck it all. Let the world burn - there's no way roaches could do a worse job of being decent than we have.

its all rubbing the republican's noses in their own lunacy.

the republicans are taking a beating over this debt ceiling move and the dems are taking advantage of it all to show that only THEY are reasonable enough to be given power in the federal government.

and the republicans just keep giving them more to work with.
whatever

But...but...a couple of rich guys in powdered wigs and tight pants who live 250 years ago told me that power to the national government is bad.
My point is, the current Republicans seem to hate the federal government, which is funny because they are in it. And it is also funny because their hate oddly coincided with when Obama became President and they lost the Congress.
In the long run, once the fog has cleared and emotions have died off, I am fairly certain that people will look at this as one of the times when the Democrats began fighting back.
Yes, I might be trolling. No, not like the guy who created the thread about towel heads.
I troll by making even the most outlandish opinions sound reasonable. The question is, am I doing that here?

oddly enough they were FINE with the feds when bush was president but when CLINTON was president, it sucked.

there is a pattern there but its so hard to see....

They're not going to do anything. Obama is going to have to enact the 14th amendment solution.

Fighting back by adopting Republican talking points. The right-wing (regardless of party) won this debate back when it was phrased in terms of "how much will we cut without even trying to raise some more revenue?" Which party has the honor of taking the next step on our post-capitalist death march is irrelevant.

I think that the united states has become like that 5 year old neighbor who used his mum's credit card (I.E. China) to buy all sorts of useless toys (I.E. Welfare) and put his family in debt (I.E. Recession). When the Repo Men come (I.E. The Tea Party) and try to take his toys away (I.E. Spend Less), he throws a tantrum (I. E. Budget Battle) and calls the Repo Men Big Bullies (I.E. STUPID IMBRED RACISTS!!!).

The best thing to do is smack that little brat, take his toys, suspend the credit card, and make him work at a lemonade stand until he pays the bills back.

I'd say war is a more useless toy than welfare and I'd say the Repo Men are retarded. Plus if you really wanted to smack the child and make it work what you should do is tax it more. Worked for Philadelphia.

Finally! She's right! Why should college kids pay more for school when the big oil get tax cuts? I think this debate shows the real side of the republicans.

Pelosi always had a spine. I'm pretty sure she has most of her collegues spines, too. Whether the rest of the Democrats mysteriously and suddenly join the phylum Chordate is somewhat doubtful

Pssh. My state has increased our tuition since they gave the board of regents the ability to rise it and we have a Democratic governor and still have a Democratic controlled state legislature and have had one for a very long time. In fact it's the GOP AG, whose running for governor, McKenna that wants to lower tuition rates and protect education from cuts. Gregoire is a shitfaced governor. Damned ashamed that she ever won anything...

Yes, except he maxed all of his mom's credit cards (i.e. the world, not just China)- and his useless toys (welfare) cost nothing compared to his frighteningly large collection of gaming consoles (military expenditure) and severe MMO habit (costly victoryless wars). The Repo man hasn't come, and he still has his consoles, and MMO accounts- and is only offering to cut back on his useless toys so he can keep them. Mum is not impressed.

(Plus if you wanted to smack the child and make it work what you should do is tax it more) Im sorry, but the source you brought me up is taxing soft drink beverages, not the people. what if someone doesn't buy soft drinks? do the Feds burst into their home and pour the mountain dew down their throat in order to tax them? if you want to tax the people, then add a corporate tax that makes the oil fat cats pay more, and increase all income taxes.

if you increase oil taxes they will just double double gas prices (or more) to make even more money then before the tax hike.

We need to work on ways to live without oil.

Then I think we should have the government put a limit on what the oil companies can charge for the gas (at least, if they want to sell in america), and maybe the government should prohibit foreign oil companies like BP and whatever the arabians own from selling here without punitive tariffs. that way we can drill in alaska to have a surplus of our own oil.

OPEC wouldnt let us put a cap. They control the majority of the prices and are already rather pissed at us.

Drilling in alaska would also be extremely difficult do to its rather nasty weather

Pelosi may have a spine, but she utterly lacks a brain.

To be honest I don't like corporate loopholes as much as the next person (and I would prefer to see them eliminated in exchange for lower corporate and income taxes), but to insinuate that one group of people wants to throw seniors out of their wheelchairs and in front of moving buses is a bit extreme...on top of claiming to hate poor people and students (which is funny, considering up until a few years ago the student loan business was private).

It's Washington, has and always will be broken.
