Not wanting America to expand makes him among the greatest Americans that ever lived?

Does not compute.

He inspired, not just people, but peoples to rise up together & defend their homelands. If there was a native american state today, he would be on the one dollar bill.

There is one... and he is cited as an inspiration... and they refuse to print money out of thin air. They rely on silver coins instead. They simply haven't received international recognition yet.

I assume we're talking about the Bessemer process?

The process itself is considerably older than the patent. Like, at least a thousand years older. But there's no reason why a timetraveller couldn't introduce some post-industrial knowledge to primitive processes.

Give any sort of fully automatic firearm to Egyptians. Let them figure out how it works, then see what the world becomes.

I'd take some of Benjamin Franklin's research notes on electricity to some Roman scholars.

All current advancements in medicine back to 14th century. Should be fun to see how it turns out.

An american history book back to the constitutional convention. That way they'd see the monster they were creating by trying to create a gov't of more vigor.

I think you'd be surprised by the reception you receive. Considering what a clusterfuck the Articles of Confederation had been, I would guess they would take your history book as vindication, rather than a cautionary tale.

I wonder if it wouldn't just end up in some tomb somewhere. They wouldn't have the scientific mind-set to figure it out. An automatic weapon is fairly complex and requires mechanics, physics, chemistry, all sort of disciplines the Egyptians didn't have.

Isn't it obvious? I'd take back the Catholic Encyclopedia to Peter/Paul/an apostle, then bring him back to the modern day so he can slap the Pope silly.

I'd take back a simple printing press (Movable type FTW) back to Rome, circa 180 BC.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Why would you expect a group of divided tribes without boats to conquer a continent on the other side of the ocean?

The population of the earth would be a lot bigger. I wonder if there would be more monarchies today. Our quality of life would probably be totally awesome. Since current medical technology includes stuff like artificial hearts (which would be quite controversial at the time) there would be full fledged cyborgs or mutants by 2011. Fact, absolutely no speculation here. ;)

Nuclear fission technology so by now we'd either be still in a nuclear winter, or have nuclear fusion.
