Going back in time.

Postby Genivaria » Sat Jul 23, 2011 4:30 am

If you could take a piece of modern technology with you back in time, what would it be and for what purpose?

I'd take some of Benjamin Franklin's research notes on electricity to some Roman scholars.

I'd take Sten guns back to the Roman Empire, and avoid a millennium and a half of the civilised world sinking back into barbarism.

Too many variables about how the thing you took back could influence the "present", for all you know it could end up changing the timeline so Hitler won WW2, or some such. Just too many paradoxes in general, but if I did take something back with me I'd take some modern scientific knowledge and give it to some ancient culture.

If you've seen "The Butterfly Effect", then you might want to reconsider.

As for me, I'd take a time machine, too. Because screw that guy in that movie, I can do it better.

Oh, the live recordings (or 'concert bootlegs') that would become possible... ;)

I'm a chemist... which maybe is kind of cheating. With a little experimentation to get proportions right, I don't doubt I could concoct gunpowder recipes... just based on what I know of history and chemistry.

Sten guns though... simple to mass produce, little complexity in assembly. A little 20th century know-how, and the 9th Legion are carrying submachine guns.

I'd go back and divert myself into one of the many multiverses where the events of Doctor Who are facts of life.

And, admittedly, hope to Christ I don't end up being Reality Bomb test fodder somewhere around July 2008.

I'd probbably copy the designs for the first planes and first war planes ever built and go back to when the American Revolution started. I'd teach them how to fly and build the planes.

I'd take a computer, loaded with the designs for all the other modern technology I didn't take. Once I arrived in 300 AD, I would build a simple generator to keep the computer powered. Then I'd go to the Norse and instruct them in the building of said technologies, starting with firearms and working up from there. This would give the Vikings the technological advantage they need to conquer the world and shape the entirety of human civilization in their own image.
This nation is maintained to reflect my actual points of view and to state my opinions in discussions of real-world issues. If you don't agree with me, fine. Just don't throttle me over it.

The '08 presidential campaign never ended. They just switched the 0 and 8 for a 1 and a 2 and kept it going.

I'd make them understand, dammit. :lol2:

But, in seriousness, I would probably take at least part of the necessary pieces to understand it or something relatively simple...I think they might be able to manage flight with the knowledge of aerodynamics and lift. *shrugs* I did say there were too many paradoxes anyway. :lol2:

I'd take my DS. Then I'd tell everyone that Mario and his friends were all real people who I shrank and imprisoned in my terrible light-stone, and that I'd do the same to them if they didn't make me Supreme Overlord.
