I would like immortality of the "can still die if I felt like it" kind. The promise of eternal life, even with the side effects, has never been seen as odd or unwanted by me. The ability to literally study the rise and fall of civilizations first hand has always appealed to me, and thus, immortality is necessary.

Maybe it's not as simple as that.

That depends. If one has delusions of grandeur and takes over Russia, it might be difficult to do that. If, on the other hand, you remain a more or less ordinary person, it isn't that difficult.

Why do you say that? It's possible to come to the conclusion that "this is the way it is, I don't seem to be about to die any time soon, but most other people do." Letting it bother you can cause problems.

Not necessarily. Some people may be born with the abilty to have a great mind, a mind so good, that it can hold up to immortality.

Eh, it just seems to be the pattern in fiction; People who actually like immortality are those that like themselves to much to end it, don't give a flying fuck in France, or are to cowardly to pull the trigger. Then, those like you and Arch, you can accept it and screw with us mortals for shits and giggles. ;)

If you had the ability to become immortal, would you do it? Depends how my life was going at the time "the question" or whatever, was asked...
What kind of parameters would you set for your immortality? (Meaning, would you want the ability to die if you wanted to quit living, or would you want to stay alive indefinetly?) Yeah, I'd want the ability to kill myself if I could..
How do you think people around you would take it? Would there be controversy about it in religious groups? I wouldn't make people take it. I'd keep myself hidden in my older years...
And finally, do you think the human mind can hold up to eternity? Fiction only mate...
And so it was, that I had never changed.

I'm kind of stuck with this idea.

On the one hand, you could live forever and explore the world, go places you thought you could never go, watch as history goes past and relive tales as you saw them.

On the other hand, unless you plan to completely avoid society altogether, you have to go through the horrible process of continuously non-stop having to suffer the loss of people you know - which would drive many people insane.

EDIT: So, even though it would be cool, it may be psychologically problematic.

Read this if you want a sliver of what it's like to be immortal and at the hands of a sadistic computer with the ability to do anything to you. Warning: Not for the weak at heart.

Like most people, I'm only becoming immortal with a "I can kill myself" plan. To see the world, do everything, learn everything, is what I want to do. And since its only going to continue, I'm never going to get bored. I might be sad and depressed about friends and family members dying, but I'll be able to hold through. At least for 600 years.
