But eternal life is really only logically possible if you have some sort of time-proof body.

Which is why I find the idea highly implausible. Until they find out how to possess eternal youth, they need to back off the idea of eternal life.

I don't believe it's logicaly possible.

i have no problem with living and i'm in no hurry to stop doing so.

main thing is to not have to be around anyone all the time.

there's a big universe out there, big enough to not have to worry about running out of it to explore.

i wouldn't want to spend it in anything that looks like a human body, even that has the limitations of bodies of any kind.

eternity in one place is not the kind of immortality i'd have in mind though.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

I don't think I would choose immortality, not in this physical form at least. I personally believe in reincarnation, which in a sense is a form of immortality that given a chance I would certainly choose.

Also, countless other people have reached a sort of immortality through apotheosis. They've written things of note, or been written down, made impacts on history people have thought important enough to be remembered. In a sense, the only thing immortal about us is what we leave in the story and history books, and memories. These things live far beyond us, perhaps not forever, but so far beyond our bodies or our minds.

Perhaps given some sort of supernatural influence one's mind may be able to last for incredible amounts of time, but no one and nothing will last forever. Eventually our bodies and minds and memories will fail, energies transform, chemicals react, matter changes forms. Eventually our sun will die, the world will freeze or get burnt up if Jupiter becomes an other star. Some day our solar system and our universe will crumble, and some day beyond that the same materials that held everything we know together will have become some new reality. Nothing lasts forever.

That was a lot deeper and cynical then I meant to get...

I must retract something on the grounds of not agreeing with it. The ones theorizing that the brain has billions of years of memory storage capacity are Creationists. To be fair, here's the article. Take it with the utmost care.

If you had the ability to become immortal, would you do it?

I will certainly not want to become immortal.. i want to enjoy life as much as i can, in a positive way, and then die, pass away as i should, and everything should be.

What kind of parameters would you set for your immortality? (Meaning, would you want the ability to die if you wanted to quit living, or would you want to stay alive indefinetly?)

If let us say, the immortality ability was forced upon me since my birth, and i have had no choice at all; but i still am being given the choice to, in a literal sense, switch the light off once i think i have had enough of life, then i will gladly accept that ability.

How do you think people around you would take it? Would there be controversy about it in religious groups?

People around me (in New Zealand) are atheist, while the other majority are non-believers anyway, so i doubt they will care much. Although, i myself would want to use that lenghtened life span to study my way, and learn as much about this world, what is important to me, and learn about myself, as much as possible.

And finally, do you think the human mind can hold up to eternity?

No, this is my personal opinion, but i do certainly think that one will eventually have had enough of an eternal life itself before madness engulfed one's self, that to surrender to the inevitable and accept reality would be much better than resisting what has been destined for since our birth.

I don't know... I mean it is a once in a lifetime offer... Yes, I think I would. Mainly because I think someone should, and think about all that you would see or could do. As a friend once put it "I just don't want to miss the party!" Or, to put is a better way "Ars longa, vita brevis, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile." As for parameters; I think I would go Highlander style just to make things interesting. In my lifetime, already, I've had many close to me pass, fall, or fade away. So, I am kind of getting use to this mortal coil thing. Ever since humans came to recognize their time was short they (we) have hoped for/ dreamed of an afterlife. So, they might carry on in some way. What has not been asked is if that is true and we survive to another realm of immortality; what (if any) have current religions done to prepare our psyches for such a revelation? Immortality in the flesh may be welcomed as proof to a religious belief of higher power, or as an abomination against the "set" natural order of things. Fear and jealousy born out of visible proof that a person does not have to die could manifest into out right hatred and extremism. Though, tangibility of life-unending would more likely win the masses. Undoubtably, there would be poking, prodding, and data collecting to make forever obtainable for "everyone." But, the chance to see far more than just another tomorrow on the horizon is undeniable by me.

Immortality with an escape clause, most definitely. Other wise, No.

Plus it would get boring, and maddening. Watching everyone you know and love die would take a huge mental toll on a person. Plus there's the problem of eternity.

To put it simply: The gods are jealous of our Mortality.

And come on, who doesn't want to know what lies beyond?
