To a twisted mind, it can mean just about anything you can make fizz in a cup or bottle.

Like carbonated water?

You are confusing over-consumption of sugars (especially refined) with... sugar in general.

I meant the sugars that are used in soda, but I was at first referring to soda being bad for you. A can a day isn't so bad, but still.

Soda or coke. Usually I say soda in writing and coke orally, depends a bit on how formal the setting is. Carbonated drink when I want to be really formal. 8)

I've never heard it being called coke either. And I've only seen soda referred to as "pop" in really old books and stuff, but not in real life.

We normally call products by their brand name. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Fanta, Solo. Also use generic names like, cola (very uncommon), lemonade, lemon squash, sarsaparilla, ginger ale. We only ever say soda in the context of soda water or baking soda. Never say pop. Pop is a ridiculous thing to call it.

Everything is ok in small enough amounts (except obviously poisonous/toxic things). Certain things, like sugar and corn syrup, only have to be consumed a little before they start being bad.

Basically, sugar is not bad if you consume it in moderation.
