What do you call soda/pop?

Postby Vitius » Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:27 am

Random, but fairly simple.

I call it soda. I'm from western Canada and the people around me often called it soda, but I heard pop as well. Three years after I moved to the U.S., I had a southern classmate and he called it 'Coke'. If he wanted orange-flavored soda, he would call it 'Orange Coke', and would proceed to put the type of flavor or drink in front of Coke to refer to what specific kind of soda he wanted. Since then, my family has gone on some trips down south (mainly to Florida) and we've passed through very rural parts of Kentucky/Tennessee and they often called it Coke as well, but they understood soda/pop and everything. However, I have heard some stories from friends when they went down south, and their waitresses/waiters didn't know what pop/soda was; they only called it Coke.

What about you?

I call it by the name of the product.

Coke is coke, tango is tango, lemonade is lemonade, diet coke is diet coke etc...

I find that means I actually get what I want when I order.

+1.

On the rare occasion that I'm talking about the general type of drink, I usually call it "something fizzy".

Yes.

Unless of course it's not OK for a woman to ask for a female to ask for a female officer to carry out body checks. In which case, the answer would be no.

Here in Aus... it usually just means a carbonated drink.

To a twisted mind, it can mean just about anything you can make fizz in a cup or bottle.

If you're in a restaurant or bar situation, you ask for the product by it's name.

I call it Soda.

I never order a "soda" though. To presume such is ridiculous. When not referring to a specific type of soda, I call it soda.

I live in MN. I inherited the trait from my ex-fiancee, who was raised in Georgia, and her family called it soda.

A lot of people seem to be misunderstanding the question. Obviously the thread means what do you refer to the genre of beverage, not "What type of carbonated, sugary beverage do you order in a restaurant?"

A fizzy drink I suppose, I'd normally just ask for what I want (A coke or what ever it is), or it's flavour (an orange fizzy)

Yeah, and I said I call it fizzy drink. But generally here, you don't just go into a shop and ask for "fizzy drink"; that's as asinine as when people on TV go into bars and ask for a beer.

I call it soda, and so does everyone else in Southern California. I've never heard it being called something else.
