Such misconceptions include, but are not limited to:
All furries are gay.
All furries are into bestiality.
All furries own a fursuit.
All furries are into yiff.
All furries are pedophiles.
All furries are male.

All of those are quite silly. Proportions of queer/straight, bestiality aficionados/not, fursuit owners/not, yiff liking/not, pedophiles/not, male/not are proportional to the rest of society (with the possible exception of the fursuit, though the number of furries who own a fursuit are still in the minority).

As it is a subculture, it is required that one identify with the subculture to belong to it. If you want to be a furry, then I suppose you are. It's up to you really.

Furries aren't any sort of big deal. The only thing about furries that really bothers me is their general overuse of stupid portmanteaus involving the word "fur". Also, the word "tailhole" kinda bugs me.

But hey, I know a furry, and the fact that he thinks Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi are cute doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I hate to say it, but the straight/gay/other divide is actually quite heavy. In the 'regular' US population, estimates for LGBT range from between 1.16% and 3%, and also Kinsey claiming 10% of US males were gay.
The offsite furry community I'm in, the vast majority are in fact LGBT. However, none are into bestiality, none own a fursuit and three or four of about 20 active people are female. Some of the stereotypes do come close to being true, I'm afraid.
