Russia at best qualifies for third. France or Britain are for more deserving of the #2 spot than Russia. Not just for having superior equipment, but for actually have trained forces. The morale of the Russian army is shit, and they are made up of mostly conscripts.

Hence why I said "arguable".

It is almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it; consequently, the defenders of every kind of regime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using the word if it were tied down to any one meaning.

How so?

A European confederation / federation could carry out investment in arms at the same scale as the US, and build a military capable of rivalling the US'.

The main limitations on European nations' militaries are to do with the budget and the resources, not with technology.

I agree with you there, theres really no drive for them to do anything like this though, and it would probably take over 30 years to accomplish if they set out on the task today.

Ironically, this is contrasted with China, that has money basically spilling out of its pockets, and vast resources, but '80s technology.

Well, the Treaty of Lisbon has authorised the EU to carry out such a form of integration if it wishes to, and numerous EU leaders have come out in support of a common defence.

Russia should be #2 due to its number of nukes. China could be #3 because of its militarism and ability to muster up the largest army in the world and have it in decent fighting shape. Then the UK and France should come after that.

Lol no.

Russia, alright, I can see how you'd put it there, but China? No.

China's navy is pathetic.

Canda>US

Canada has the US and the UK protecting them but even if they weren't we would be fine be fine because nobody wants to fight Canada so we don't need a millitary, but we still have one just in case.

the US has the ENTIRE middle east after them, and north korea as well.

so i consider myself safer as a Canadian.

Right, but their defense strategy takes this into account, and China does not need a navy that can beat the US in order to defend it's interests. They have focused on frustrating US naval power in much more cost-effective ways, such as the Dong carrier-killer missile. Fear China's mighty Dongs!

Transport is immensely important. And how else would you land troops into a nation and have a retreat secured?

How else would you have an efficient air force?

Fucking everyone, especially the US, they're kinda necessary for power projection and especially fast response when you may not have a base nearby. Seriously they're very useful.
When was the last time the America navy had a real engagement with any force that could be described within even a rate of it?

WW2, because that was the last time there was a navy that existed on our level, I'd like to keep it that way.

And waste a lot of fuel as well. Where would it land? Where would it be maintained? On board carriers, that's where.

Not useless, just much more suited to bombing your neighbor or self defense(but few Western nations have hostile neighbors).

Beat them in what way? You think that JSDF could straight-out invade China successfully, or just successfully defend Japan's interests from Chinese aggression?
