Man, can you imagine what medieval knights would think of us? They had to slash people up for a living! We can't even cut somebody with a knife. Kids as young as 8 were hunting deer. Society has made us very weak.

I hope california isn't on that list. But, reading your comment, it probably isn't a good idea for most people to carry around something bigger than 3 inches if they don't know how to use it.

Yeah, anything longer then about 8 inches, people tend to get "Rambo syndrome".

I got a 7.5 inch KABAR in my camping gear. Best fucking knife i've ever had the pleasure of handling. Its saved my ass on a couple occasions, but it can get unwieldy in some situations. I've done some pretty basic combat knife fighting stuff with it, and it really isn't hard to see how anything larger would be a problem. I know people who can't use 2.5 inch paring knives, let alone a 4 inch buck knife...

Different mindset back then. They were hardened to it a lot sooner then we were, if we ever became hardened to something like that. They were also probably a lot stronger then us. Can you imagine swinging a 10 pound sword for hours on end?

I've swung both a ten pound slegdehammer and shot a deer when I was 7. Not really traumatic experiances either.

I shoot deer too. its not a big deal. What is is taking a sharp iron sword and hacking another person to death with it.

Also, swinging a ten pound sledge is easy enough for alittle while when you let the weight do the work. Try swinging it horizontally, and with control (stopping it, instead of letting it carry through the swing). It gets much harder as the hours tick on.

Without all our technology? Probably, yes. We're a lot softer then our ancestors were, even 100 years ago.

I guess. Although, how much more traumatic can it be? The dude is still (hopefully) dead right? I could se tourture as maybe more mentally taxing but when you are just trying to straight up kill a dude, you knew back there what was going to happen, just as you knew that neck shot was going to drop that deer. And physically it would be more challenging, but we could get used to it. Plus I heard/read somewhewre that most battles in antiquity were long periods of standing still and then short bursts of frenetic activity.

I told my fiance that I wanted to go hunting the old way. With a bow that I made myself, and a knife that was made by human hands. I think it'd make the hunt more worthwhile when we get a kill. It'd probably be dangerous. But, a sidearm as precaution would be nice.

You are a fool. Civilized is a relative term. We could meet a civilization that is millions of years advanced beyond us, but think that slavery and slaughtering people is perfectly civilized. Heck, the Romans were 'civilized' for their time. They outdid every other nation at that time! They still had slaves, gladiatorial games to the death, and much more. To think that you are more civilized is folly.

Anything less than a 17" spike is not an effective bayonet. 8" is barely effective for stabbing, tbh. Maybe trimming your whiskers, or cutting a steak, or perhaps some other utility task like wirecutting or hand-to-hand combat, but not for bayonet fighting. I personally believe that a bayonet and a combat knife are separate weapons, like a shotgun and a rifle, they can't be used for the same purposes because they are inherently different. Speaking of which, my Mosin Nagant gets more use as a spear than a rifle.

I'm also in the process of acquiring a 18" sword bayonet for my FN49. I don't like the stubby thing that came with it.

I heard the new ones, the OKC-3S, are 8 inches. Ghastly mofos, and I hope to one day have the privilege of carrying one.

no, it's a matter of opinion. I am of the opinion that it is more civilized to not kill people with oversized knives than it is to kill people with oversized knives (while simultaneously fallign over in exhaustion from being dehydrated due to dysentery). You are, apparently, not?
