The other part being the money, one would assume... as cynical as that is.

Then again, I could make a case for Drogba's move being partly because of Anelka's encouragement perhaps. It could be that he genuinely wants to help Chinese football grow. People criticised Beckham's move to MLS... and it does appear as though he meant it to some degree. I dunno. You're probably right though. Its hard to think anything beyond cynicism in regard to footballers these days, as much as I want to believe Drogba's reasons aren't money motivated, I just can't.

For the record, I f'n love Didier. Ever since he was at Marseille (my favourite French club).

I have quite a bit of respect for Drogba. He clearly loves the game and gives it his all - remember his somewhat heroic decision to go ahead and play in WC 2010 despite his badly busted up arm - less than a year after getting ill with malaria? His money has done quite a lot of good throughout West Africa, too, what with his charity setting up schools and hospitals and day programs for children. I like to think that, even if money was a factor (as it undoubtedly would be - who would say no to ~£10,000,000 over two years?), his desire to genuinely help Chinese football and the world's largest nation as a whole also played a role.

Also, rumour has it Yakubu might be on his way out to Shanghai, too.

Your serious defence for them making a wrong call is that they also maybe made another wrong call before that? And you're confused on why people are getting worked up?

Blatter said the error had convinced him to reopen the debate on goal-line technology at a board meeting in July."

Nazis in Space wrote:What, precisely, is wrong with footballers switching clubs and leagues on the basis of monetary advantages?

I'd suspect the criticisms of footballers being primarily money-motivated are based on the way they are hero-worshipped by fans... and perhaps the notion that if you're already earning millions, why do you need to double that? Comes across as greed. Of course its often hypocrisy, and the people saying it would do the same thing... but that doesn't change the way its perceived.

I'll freely admit I'm jealous of the opportunity professional footballers have to both make obscene amounts of money doing something I love, and test themselves against the world's best. As things stand, I'd love the opportunity simply to play against the world's best. So I like to think I'd prefer to challenge myself against the best and make a lot of money over simply making a lot of money... well, unless I had some specific reason to want/need more money than the £1.1 million the average premier league player is supposedly paid per year.

That all said, these things don't make it wrong. And I've made that case many times. Particularly to my friends working in the NHS. It just comes across as "not right". In the same way that a team playing boring football isn't playing wrong football, but it doesn't seem right either. It's all too easy to forget that professional football is just entertainment. If a musician opts to play at larger venues with higher ticket prices over a few smaller venues with lower ticket prices, near to where the foundation of their fanbase is, they get called a sell-out. Same thing. They're not doing anything wrong, but if you're one of those fans near the smaller venues, you may well be (understandably) upset and critical about it.

Yeah but you also have to consider that its Italy.
I'm pretty sure Italy's penalty record is the same as England's... Actually, maybe "better" because the one shootout they won made them world champions. England's earned them the right to lose on penalties to Germany. Again.

Quarter Final predictions for me are...

CZE 1-2 POR
GER 2-1 GRE
SPA 1-2 FRA (aet)
ENG 0-1 ITA (aet)

Though the France one is wishful thinking more than anything.
Then semis...

GER 1-2 ITA
POR 1-2 FRA

Then France over Italy in the final, 2-1 aet again probably. For an added twist, Balotelli to get sent off in extra time.

Okay, I'm going to have to adjust my predictions (stupid Netherlands).

Forsher wrote:I don't know as much as you lot so I say that we should see the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and, this last one based entirely off many of your predictions, Italy in the semi-finals.

Spain to beat France 1-0, what else?
Portugal will beat the Czech Republic
Germany will beat Greece, probably not 4-1
Italy to beat England, sadly

That'll result in Germany beating Spain in the final, hopefully by three goals or more (stupid Spain).

Curiously enough, on average, the refs for this EC are reallyreallyreally good. Certainly considerably superior to the previous WC.
