I notice that a bot called Google Adsense seems to be a constant presence on this forum as one of the users. Are we being spied on? Is Max planning to fund the forum with advertising? Are there already ads - I can't tell as I have blocked all advertising ever since Jolt decided to stick ads in the actual posts?
Are we there yet?

Oh, there is also Google Bot, Yahoo Bot, AskJeeves Bot, MSN Bot, Baidu Spider, etc. There are already ads, yes, on the top right and left panel. Not intrusive, but IIRC they said it pays the cost of running this site. I don't worry much, we're not being spied on, and at least I know I'm not alone in the forum. :lol:

EDIT: And yes, there is a poster who named himself Google AdSense after the bot. Perhaps he's the one spying on you. ;)

The ads you see on the left? Their generated by a GoogleBot to generate context ads.

Google Adsense bots are everywhere around the internet to provide ads relevant to the page they're on.

Google Adsense is, as other posters have said, one of many bots which determine what ads are put up on the page.

They were active on Jolt also, but just weren't visible

As everybody else has said, the Adsense bot determines what ads show in the horizontal ad banner in the top right, and the vertical ad banner on the bottom left, underneath the sidebar. They do help cover the cost of the site (remember, Max is paying for this now!) since we're not on Jolt now.

I can promise on the Boss' behalf though, that ads on NS (and the forums!) won't get more intrusive than that. Certainly no ads in posts/in the middle of threads and so on.
