So we have visiters from Hawaii that come down to Port Alberni,Canada every year for about 2 months. They are nice enough people just one thing. They are heavy Christians. Now don't get me wrong they are great people... Just if they don't spread their beleifs. So any way we invited them for dinner and this is how it goes...

Dad:Well, dig in!
Hawaiin:Oh, well shouldn't we say grace?
Mom:Oh well we don't do that around here.
Hawaiin:Oh so your an athiest?
Mom:No, we are not either.
Dad:Well lets just eat our foo...
Hawaiin:HOLD on, we have to say grace.
Dad:Ok then...
Hawaiin:Thank you Lord Jesus for this wonderfull meal (blah blah blah)
Mom:Shouldn't you be thanking the chef that made it and not Jesus (laughs)
Hawaiin:You did a wondefull job.

So what do you guys have to say?

That religions are the only things capable of Damning people, IIRC...and therefore by suggesting a damning that may make you religious, :D

But, meh, I suffer through a grace everytime I go eat with my parents, and I live through it, ;)

as a host you should accommodate their need to bless their food before eating it.

I suggest have a Wiccan priest bless the food next time.

Here's how that should have gone.

Them: Hey, shouldn't we say grace?
You guys: Eh, say grace if you want. I'll be eating.
Them: Cool. -Grace'd-
You: NOM NOM NOM.

I've seen that phrase a lot lately. What, perchance, does it mean? The only thing close to it that I know is IRC, and that has nothing to do with religion.

If I recall correctly.

If that's your biggest gripe, I think you haven't met real fanatics.

A cooler way of handling it might be to suggest that anyone who would like to say grace may do so... and then go about beginning your own meal as usual. Most people I know who say grace will simply bow their heads and clasp their hands and give silent thanks. I leave them to their moment of reflection and eat my food while it's hot. Everyone's happy.

You should be thankful that the guy didn't suggest that you say the grace.

If I recall correctly, ever since I also learned it, it has been one of my most used acronyms, next to "lol" of course, :lol2:

Your tale of the suffering engendered by having to sit through a torturous 45 sec. before meal blessing fails to arouse any sympathy.

If they're from Hawaii, wouldn't they be coming up to Canada, rather than down? Unless they're going via Antartica and circling the globe, which would be a bit of a long trip.

Wait, aren't they supposed to be offering up sacrifices to strange gods with way, way too many syllables in their names?

So let them say grace, sit quietly and respectfully as they do so, don't mock them. They have their ways, you have yours. It's not up to you, or your parents, to criticize them. Nor is it up to them to criticize you. You don't have to believe what they believe, but you should be tolerant.

It wasn't a full blown argument though? Just a joke, didn't kick them out of the house or anything.

I say you are unwise to cross any Hawaiian, Christian or not.

Your discussion has already put you in a very bad predicament spiritually.

Take head and humble yourself before it is to late.

What do I have to say?

1) Sounds to me like ya'll were rather rude to your guests. You may not share their beliefs, but that doesn't excuse your family's apparently rude behaviour, nor does it excuse your bitching about it here. These people were guests in your home. You and your family may not share their beliefs, but it is simple hospitality to respect their beliefs, and does not harm you. What your father should have does was to have said "OK, please go ahead." while you waited.

2) Contrary to certain other posts, it's not acceptable to start eating before your guests. That again is simply bad manners.

3) If these people visit every year for two months, why are you all of the sudden surprised at their saying grace?

4) What on Earth are you complaining about? That's a very common practice in NA.

5) What're "visiters"?

6) What's a "Hawaiin"?

7) Does the fact that they're overweight have any relevance to this story?

7) Maybe rather than critricisng other people behaviour, you might want to go do your English homework after apologising to your guests.

My grace would be something like 'good food, good meat, good god, let's eat. Hail Eris!' And then I'd yell at people for eating hot dogs with buns if the meal were on a Friday.
