Was Stalin evil?

Postby Arilandon » Sun Jun 26, 2011 10:38 am

Many people believe that Stalin was an evil person. By the most conservative estimates he killed at least 11,3 million people, but on the other side he helped stop nazism and industrialised the undeveloped Soviet Union. Was he evil or not?

One of the better definitions of evil I've heard is: "the ends justifying the means, and the ends being mostly or entirely self serving." So yeah, I'd say Stalin qualifies.
•Criticism of sentimental love, marriage, sex, religion, and rituals.
•Valuing reason over emotion and imagination
•Ironic, indirect, and impersonal (objective) representation of ideas.
•Uncompromising criticism of romantic illusions.
•Advocacy of pragmatism and disapproval of idealism and ideology.
•Especially vehement opposition to neo-liberalism, social democracy, communism, libertarianism and feminism.
•Satirisation of irrational and whimsical attitudes of the so-called creative class.
•Criticism of social, political, cultural, and moral customs and manners of the contemporary society.

He killed 20 million people, invaded the Baltic Countries, invaded Eastern Europe and caused incredible amounts of suffering until people overthrew the commie dictators in 1989..
Yup, I'd say he was evil. He was actually the most evil person on Earth, Mao Zedong comes as a close second

Let me simplify it a bit:

Stalin = very, very evil

Clear now?

I dont beleive in good and evil, but Stalin was an asshole!

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

Well, you didn't even provide a definition of "evil" or a source for your "most conservative estimates". So, spammy and also a bit of copycat.

I'd say that yes, he was Evil. Definitely by my standards.

Yes, definitely. Some of his intentions could at least be called decent (he seemed to have really cared about the Soviet Union as a nation...less so about individual citizens), but his ruthlessness and casual cruelty make him evil.

What a fantastic summary of Stalin's reign.

This, and didn't source that it was him that did the industrializing as opposed to the communist revolution in general, or why merely opposing an evil when it attacks you would make one less evil. And asked us to compare it another spam thread. And basically just gave no food for thought, merely asked a question sure to piss people off.

One would claim that great deeds require great sacrifices, and it takes a brave man to make them.

It's ok, because it was for the commie side, and it aimed for a noble goal.

Had it been achieved, all the sacrifices would have been worthy.

We shouldn't refuse the merit of the actions which would have been excusable if the turnout had been different; rather, we should oppose the "history is written by the winners" attitude.
