Hypocrisy in the Dating World.

Postby The Truth and Light » Thu Jun 23, 2011 3:32 pm

I, as well as many of my female friends, am a supporter of equal rights amongst gender and against gender roles. Most women I know are supporters of this. We live an age where women are becoming more and more encouraged to break the shackles of gender roles.

But yet I still know women, who, though they have told me they are feminist, equal to a man, against gender roles, whatever, still do this.

They expect the dates to be paid for by the man. The rings to be bought by the man. Presents for Valentine's Day; again from the man.

Now, I have nothing against this in and of itself, but I'm abit sick of certain women discussing at length the end to gender roles and sexism, but at the end of the day, it's the same story with dating?

Why can't I (a male) hypothetically go out with a girl and be treated for the first date? What is so wrong with that?

I've generally gone Dutch or alternated paying for the date with my past girlfriends, actually.

It depends on who asked for the date. You seem to think that the male will always pay in every dates.

Course, I'm not in a relationship, soooo I wouldn't know how this works out.

There's nothing wrong with that. However, we live in a society that expects men to be the ones 'treating' their dates to a meal. It's expected because our society is big on 'gender roles'. There's, to me, no rhyme or reason. but that's the way it is.

Should it change? Definitely.

I am not like that. If anything I will pay on a first date to make sure I don't owe the person another visit. I abhor owing anyone anything.

Psst I will buy meiko the ring. :)

Now you see why I call myself a masculinist as well as a feminist ;)

When I say "break gender roles" I don't just mean "Let me out of the kitchen", I mean the added part of "Let me work and support you" too! When I say "Take me seriously", I mean take me seriously, not "Let me play emotional tactics to get out of responsibility".

Though I think you'll find many feminists are less "feminist" and more gender egalitarian, and will likely agree with you here. I certainly do <3

Socialization is a bitch to get rid of. It's one thing to recognize that enforced gender roles are crap and quite another to fully break away from them.

Generally speaking, the male is attempting to win the attention of the female, and the female has her pick of a crop of males. So you need to spoil them to stand out.

This is obviously less true for humans than it is for other species though.

I've never actually had to pay fully for a date myself (though I do it anyway because shit, it's not that much, honestly).

It's what I hear about so often from some of my Lady Friends.

I hear girls say crazy stuff. The same girls will gossip about the idiocy of men but I will hear them the next day claim that they hate to go Dutch. It's "unladylike" or some shit.

I...I don't actually think this happens from experience maybe your chums are saying that more because of who is asking :p

As a guy I do like to pay because it just seems to be the masculine and proper thing to do (feels bad having someone pay for you regardless no?) obviously if you have some sort of problem with it just stop dating those women.

I guess it's the price we pay for it being socially accepted for us to be promiscuous. Hopefully, in not too many years women can be "whores" too without it being considered a bad thing. Wouldn't just be beneficial for them, but for us too, if you know what I mean. 8)

Women also earn less, so it's not that unreasonable that the man usually pays. A woman that earns more than the man should pay though. Give equality a few more generations to develop. Fminism and the sexual liberation is still quite young, and complete change doesn't happen over night.

Yeah had to try and break a spoiled little rich girl of the habit of claiming to want to go dutch then not paying when the check came. Especially after eating half her lunch and ordering a dessert that cost more than her lunch after I said lets eat here the lunches are cheap.
