I'm fairly certain that you don't have to be a Master Mason to be a Shriner.
Master is only the third degree.
But yes you do.
After master you can go to the York Rite or the Scottish or in this case the Shriners. There are various other masonic bodies though.

I don't know, I'd have to ask my dad again. He was (and is) really involved in all that, kind of broke his heart when I became a Catholic though

My ex-husband was a member of DeMolay, a Mason's organization. His mother and sister were Eastern Star members, which a Mason's womens auxillary.
