What is YOUR national animal, and why?

I've seen a variety of different national animals since I joined up. Birds, foxes, spaghetti monsters... What I want to know is what is YOUR national animal, and why did you choose it? Tell us a bit about it. Post safe reference images if you have them.

To start, the national animal of Denau is the Prism Wing.

The Prism Wing is a small bird, no bigger than one's fist. Its most notable feature is, obviously, the rainbow colored plumage. Originally, the Prism Wing was said to be one of many of the messengers for the Holy Goddess Daelu; and is therefore treasured amongst the populus of the nation as a holy bird. They feed mostly on small insects and assorted wild nuts. Their natural dwelling is everywhere in the vasts forests of Denau, but are also known to dwell sparsely in several places beyond their borders. Though they have been seen flying over the city on occasion, it is a very rare sight.

The Koala. We would have chosen the kangaroo, but since our citizens are sapient kangaroos, it seemed a little egotistical to make ourselves the national animal.

Well now, so far I've seen some more interesting reasons for choosing their nations' animal... For the record, the nation of Denau does not eat Prism Wing, nor is it permitted to hunt them. Just seems a little strange to me...eating one's own national animal. But enough of that! Let's hear some more national animals and the reasons behind why you chose them!

The national animal of the Socialist Republic of Rustonia is the Rustonian Vampire Eel.

The RVE is a subsect of freshwater Moray Eels, and live primarily in the lakes and rivers of northern Rustonia. The animal is a carnivore, and has been known to eat other RVEs when food is low. The animal is named after an old legend, dating back to 27 ad., in which Emperor Bagrat II of Rustonia kept a pit of them, and would routinely throw people into said pit. According to the tale, the shallow waters would turn a crimson red from the blood of the RVE's victims.

For many years, very little knowledge of the eel was known, due to it being nocturnal and living primarily in the bottoms of lakes and rivers. However, it was discovered in 1971 that the Vampire Eel actually drinks the blood of it's prey before eating the body, as it is able to digest and absorb proteins and chemicals in blood that most others cannot.

The Vampire Eel can grow up to 2 metres long, and can weigh in excess of 46 kilograms. A usual mother will lay in between 5-7 eggs per year, and sexually matures in the middle of it's second year. Due to it's large size and weight, Vampire Eels have been known to attack much larger animals. However, it is relatively easy to domesticate an individual specimen, and wild Vampire Eels will rarely attack larger animals unless threatened or starving.

The Tsvarchivan white lioness is Tsvarchi's national animal. Its appearance is strikingly similar to an actual lion, hence the name, and it is also a very bright 'glacier' white in fur color. The size of the animal is also the same to that as a traditional lion.

The Tsvarchivan white lioness has a storied history as the pet of the monarchy throughout the ages, particularly the females, which were trained to protect the the royal family from enemies, foreign and domestic. The Tsvarchivan white lion is among one of Tsvarchi's most popular pets as a result (only the males; females cannot be owned).

Wild Tsvarchivan lions live primarily in the boroughs of Darkaan and Atrulia, where they're from originally, although sightings of the animal have been reported in all eight boroughs as of 2009. The animal eats a primarily fish diet, so it lives by water sources with plenty of fish to hunt. The animal, like all animals in Tsvarchi, is a protected class in Tsvarchi and as such it cannot be hunted, as murder is illegal.

The moose is the national animal of Gutia, why?
Because it is a majestic beast and that it is very common to find in Gutia, it is like the lion in that it is called the king of it's environment, in this case the forest.

We eat the moose, though only during the moose hunting season which is relatively short. The moose hunt is conducted to prevent car on moose accidents and possible inbreeding which would be bad for the moose population.

The Betta was chosen as it was a popular pet. It is kept because of tradition, but the Arctic Fox which is common is most agreed to symbolise Dagnia. It is common here and it is viewed as an intelligent, independent, clever animal, three traits our nation values.

We do not eat it,nor do we hunt it.It is our national animal because it is strong,beautiful,and also in my opinion fits well with our strong air force.We even have an elite group of pilots called "The Black Falcons".Oh,and the dictator has a few of these in The Imperial Palace.
