We live in a solar system of 8 plants and there are 100 billion solar systems in the milky way galaxy and their are billions of galaxies in the universe. Couple that with 50,000 UFO sightings a year which can't all be hoax's and the fact that other planets would definitely be able to sustain life and the creating of life via primordial soup. Some aliens would be friendly, some bad, and others neutral. Some will be advanced, some will be primitive. Some might have visited earth and other planets. Others may not have ever heard of earth at all or maybe not even know what space is.

Some are pure hoax, but most of the UFO sightings just have a natural explanation.

It's cultural related too. Americans see more flying saucers than any other culture on the planet. Well, I don't believe that aliens have more interest in USA. From a touristic point of view, Europe is more interesting anyway. :)

In other cultures they "see" more flying witches, angels & demons, while in other cultures they are conspicuous by absence.

Isn't it a bit strange that we have 50,000 UFO sightings a year and not one alien landed on, by instance, Time Square and shook hands with the surprised humans?

Americans are paranoid.

I believe, think about it, and the universe is huge, so there must be other lifeforms, I dont think they can travel trillions of miles in a second or that they are blood thirsty man eating things, I think they would probably be like us.

I believe that in our vast universe there exist other classifications of "life" that we can't even conceive of. I also accept that we will probably never find them and they will probably never find us.

Other sentient beings from outer space have never been here, and if they have they did the right thing in leaving before we tried to kill them.

Statistically speaking, it is quite likely that extraterrestrial life exists.
Have they visited us? Probably not, as the most likely case is single-celled organisms, and perhaps simple aquatic multicellular life like hydroids and jellyfish. Maybe, at the most advanced, arthropods.
I doubt that there are any other forms of extraterrestrial life, which makes visitation of us void.

Mathematically, it's impossible that this is the only planet with sentience on it. If Earth IS the only planet with sentient life, I suppose it means the Abrahamic religions were right, and I can't believe that based on their views of women and other things I have encountered and experienced.

However, I also do not believe the UFO phenomena are caused by extraterrestrials...

a single gene? unlikely. Check out all the genes in the ~1% difference between humans and apes, the set of genes that code for sufficient brain function to be considered sentience will be in there somewhere.

Of course there are many alien civilizations.

And we are to them as undeveloped as these guys are to us: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinelese_people

There is maybe similar reasons why we haven't been officially contacted.

Yeah, I think there are aliens, based on probability.

Nah, probably not.

How would I know? If they're anything like us, then perhaps so. Perhaps they use the same tactic us humans use: "ZOMG THIS GUY'S DIFFERENT! LET'S ASSAULT HIM AND MAKE UP RANDOM REASONS TO DO SO!!!".

Of course.

Indeed, but perhaps these aliens may be silicon based lifeforms, rather than carbon based ones like us.

In which case everything about them and their planet will be drastically different to us.

There certainly aren't aliens out there. And if there were, they would definitely never bother to visit your pathetic blue dirtball inhabited by small pinkish hairy meatbags. Let alone deploy advance scouts to take over the bodies of prominent Earthlings in order to subvert your political system and brainwash the populace into becoming loyal slaves to run the slood mines. That would just be stupid.

Carry on, absolutely nothing to see here etc

It is a matter of simple mathematics to establish that aliens almost certainly do exist. It is a matter of even more simple mathematics to establish that they would almost certainly not be able to get to us, and even if they could, that there would be no benefit to them in doing so.

I can see your point, but there is a need to narrow down the search due to our lack of scanning tech and money. If we start scanning in each planet, we reduce our chances of finding anything in a given time.

I've never really understood why people assume that aliens would be more civilised or advanced than us. Misanthropy, presumably. I mean, why couldn't there be a planet out there with aliens in the equivalent of out Dark Ages? Who's to say the first civilisation we encounter won't be Aztecs IN SPACE?

Indeed. We have only one example of a planet on which life can function. So maybe there could be life on any given planet, but there definitely could be life on a planet like Earth.
