Ok, I got several questions... 1) how fast was that first car going to actually send a bear flying not just through the windshield, but out the back window as well. 2) I wonder what the insurance company processing that claim will say...

and 3) how many jokes can we get outta this.

1) Kinetic energy = 1/2 times the mass times the square of the velocity. (KE = 1/2 * m * v^2)
That means the velocity doesn't actually have to increase very much for the kinetic energy to go up a lot. Twice the velocity is four times the kinetic energy, for example. A car already has a good deal of mass, much more than the bear, so even going at 30 miles an hour actually gives it a lot of kinetic energy to transfer. As for hitting the second car, you know have to factor in that it was traveling in the opposite direction. Let's say it was traveling at 30 miles an hour...you could have a combined speed of 60 miles of the two cars, and the bear near that. Now we're starting to talk about a lot of energy.

2) The Insurance claim will probably follow whatever their standard practice is for cases of death and/or animal damage. Neither is going to be exceptionally unusual, particularly in Canada (on the animal one).
