I like squared the best, I learned to use them quite fast. It was either starving to death in Singapore or learning to use chopsticks.

Definitely circular ones are better, although square ones are not that bad and triangular ones are just weird to me. They make me want to hold it like a pen... Anyway, I've never seen a pair of chopsticks shaped like a dodecahedron... If anybody finds a pic, post it here. I would love to see what it looks like.

Generally food is shared among a variety of plates, to which there was a continuous process of picking food to your bowl. At that point one held the bowl to the mouth and shoveled it in.

In Asia, rice is more a settler eaten at the end of the meal than a base to the food.

Only since SARS have restaurants adopted the practice of one set of chopsticks for picking food from the shared dish and another for your own bowl.

It isn't a real answer because 1) they didn't explain how chopsticks make Asian food taste better.

2) It is complete bullshit.

1) Hell if I know, I would presume its a novelty and thus agitates the brains somewhat. Its also possible that the manner one eats food off of chopsticks changes which part of the tongue touches the food.
2) Taste is a subjective experience, for me and many others it enhances the taste.

An acute observation, there are even different kinds of glasses to drink different kinds of beer out of.

The best way to drink something is when its super cold but not yet slushy. Or a beer in a frosted glass.

Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

I use Chopsticks whenever I'm eating food that calls for it, and I use my fingers when food calls for that. I'm sort of a food traditionalist, I guess. I like the circular kind, if only because they tend to be made from better material here in the US so I don't have to grab 60 packets of chopsticks whenever I get some Asian food so I don't run out. I mostly just eat noodle-based foods with them, since I don't have the patience to get rice down using em.

Most chopstick utilizing cuisines either started with spoons and abandoned them over time or still utilise them. China and Korea still use spoons, for example.

However, rice in chopstick utilizing cuisines is generally of the short or medium grain varieties, which are stickier and thus easier to eat with sticks. One doesn't pick op individual grains but clumps or brings the bowl to the mouth and shovels.

Barringtonia wrote:Generally food is shared among a variety of plates, to which there was a continuous process of picking food to your bowl. At that point one held the bowl to the mouth and shoveled it in.

Depends on the culture and the particular cuisine. When chopsticks were introduced to Japan from China, only the Japanese nobility used them, with each person not only having their own individual dishes, but their own table. While some common pot meals are found in modern Japanese cuisine (nabe "hot pots" especially, like sukiyaki and chankonabe - the food of sumotori), most food is served individually.

Obvious advantages of the square variety is that they won't roll away when you put them down, while many claim that the rounded variety are more environmentally friendly.

Personally, I find the square type slightly more ergonomic, and I'm a fan of putting my chops flat-side down over the top of my bowl.

For me, it really depends. For sushi, I prefer round chopsticks. It makes gripping the rolls easier for me. For eating rice or other Oriental dishes, I prefer square.

But is it a wheat beer? There is a different glass for a wheat beer as opposed to a malt beer. And even then, there's a certain way to pour a wheat beer. They way something is ingested makes a considerable diffence, making the statement true: chopsticks makes food taste so much better.

You can pick up food easier with square chopsticks. So their best for beginners. Circle ones might be a little bit more delicate but also harder to use when you just start out.

Ultimately I prefer squares because my round ones tend to roll onto the floor. I suppose that is why most of the Asian Cultures like to eat so close to the ground.
