I tend to prefer round chopsticks, for no reason I can think of. My family uses them, I grew up with them...

The square ones (the really cheap disposable "buy a pack of 200 for 2$") are easier to carry around in the bag (if I forget my kit at home) and are easier to use with sushi...

All the chopsticks I have used have been round at the end you pick up food, though most were square at the end you hold. What I struggle with are the ones that taper to a really thin point, I much prefer ones without much of a taper. I also find plain bamboo or wood easier than other materials or finishes.

I find lenth then material to be the more important factors with my chopsticks. Chinese and Vietnamese sticks are tooooo long after years in Japan. Plastic and metal are right out, laquered sticks are too slick, bamboo's OK, wood's good, and cheap waribashi are just right...

I often eat food WITH chopsticks, and I believe that neither are better. Why? I eat with my golden hexagonal chopsticks.

Go on. Eat your spaghetti on a banana leaf.

Eating using the hands sounds easy, but when I was a kid, the elders back in the rural hometown of my mother chided me that I don't know how to eat with my hands. Apparently there is a proper way to do it.

We have multiple types and styles, which I'm fairly good with. Experience counts.

Half square (handles), half round (tips) seems to be a reasonable compromise. Throwaway wood, lacquered wood, ivory, metal, and some that I can't identify easily are in our kitchen.

I'm thinking that the metal ones last longer in communal kitchens that use industrial dishwashers, even though that gives up the germ fighting characteristics of wood. Lacquered wood look very nice but have to be carefully hand cleaned to retain their appearance.

I also went to the trouble of learning to use them right-handed so that I'd not offend locals in the less developed parts of Asia [I'm left-handed]. Not the prettiest sight, I'm sure, and I can eat rice that way so it's functional enough.

You people have to make everything so complicated. I just wanted an excuse to violate established social norms, and you have to ruin everything for me.

I have only ever utilized the small, wooden cheapo ones from fast food restaurants. In college I ate at a Japanese style rice bowl place a ton, and they had round ones. Panda Express, a Chinese-esque fast food restaurant, uses the square ones that you have to break apart when you get them. I do not, due to the small size, recall there being any sort of advantage of one over the other, but I enjoyed the circle ones most. So I choose those.

That said, I have seen the huge chopsticks (reusable, all smooth and shit) and it would seem to me that the most ergonomic ones would be triangle ones, but any straight side would definitely help you grip food better, and have the sticks sit in your hand easier.

To be honest, I'm comfortable with either round or square--I could use my own square-handled round-tipped wood chopsticks as easily as I could use the disposable square chopsticks you find in a restaurant or my mom's own round metal chopsticks. However, I use my left hand in all cases, being a left-hander myself. It just feel unnatural using my off-hand to hold two things that are as thick as and longer than the pens I use when writing.

I prefer the kind that come to a point to the ones that don't. Usually I suppose the ones I like best are rounded, but that's not the part I like about them.

I can use both (and actually only own the blunt ones right now since I'm lazy and haven't been looking for the pointed ones much at all), it's just a preference.

Why did the same cultures that eats loads of rice develop chopsticks to eat with. Seems so counter-intuitive (or do they secretly use spoons?).
