If you´d just left out "ein", it would be okay, because "Obst" needs no further word before it. You would say "ein", if you´d have specified a special masculine fruit, e. g. "ein Apfel".

It's alright to say ein with Obst because Obst is neuter, thus uses "ein" in the nominative case. But he still shouldn't have used it.

Yeah, I'd prefer to let the german native take authority on german usage. You were almost right, but 'sein' doesn't take the akkusativ.

Sein is normally used as the infinitive of to be, but when used as a pronoun, it actually does take the akkustativ. And ein most definitely does, because ein switches to einer with masculine verbs.

I was most clearly trying to refer to the fact that Obst is a neuter, hence why I pointed it out in the beginning of the discussion.

nono. 'sein' as in the verb 'to be'. When describing something, the nominative applies to the object of the sentence when using the verb 'sein' because the subject and object are the same.

Obst is like the collective word for fruit. Would 'Frucht' be better or would you have to say a specific type of fruit?

Usually specify it, because it sounds better.
