The U.S likes to do some unsavoury things abroad - but for what it's worth; when its profitable to do so,they provide regional security regimesto keep a flow of commerce and access to vital resources. Pull all American troops out of the Middle East for instance - and observe what the Iranians and Saudis would do to each other. And given the importance of the stability of this region, to the overall global economy.....

Also, pull out of South East Asia; you'll have an escalting security dilemma there as well.

The U.S isn't nearly as important as the Maldives though.

That's the most idiotic thing I've heard all day! Hitler only wished to stray away from having the Americans join the war after what had happened in World War I. He knew his forces wouldn't be able to handle fighting them with another enemy so close (USSR), and didn't want to declare war on America until they had enough power to do so (e.g. using conquered European troops). He wanted "world domination" and the rise of the "Aryan race" etc. etc., he would of eventually attacked the Americas there is absolutely no doubt in it.

Actually, Hitler just wanted Europe and, even then, not all of it. No doubt he might have aimed to attack America if he had formed his empire but, as I've said above, that would never have happened. He would have been trying to hold onto too much land with too few men, while trying to keep England and the Soviets at bay.

You forget that Nazi Germany declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor, on December 11th, because of their treaty obligations with Japan. So unless Hitler could have talked the Japanese out of that attack, there was no way the US could stay neutral with respect to the war in Europe.
