What is your favourite hymn?

Postby Norfsex » Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:05 am

With all the religion stuff thrown aside, along with all this talk about who Jesus is or isn't, what he believed and how he wanted his followers to believe, &c., ignoring Religion and Theology, what would you say is your favourite hymn?

I like that one, and "Onward, Chrstian Soldiers," too.

The best one I ever heard was on that the Legio I Italica sang as they marched past my place at Nola once. Really nice three-part harmony, with touches of an Eastern melody. Of course, being soldiers, the lyrics were not exactly fit for church. They went something like, "We're the First Italica, we're gonna kill all the Arians, Nestorians, the Docetists, and any other bleeping heretics we find!"

Also I Vow to Thee My Country.

Way back in the day, when I was in the school choir, we had a to sing that. A few of us sang it in Church on one occasion too. I used to like it until it got drilled into my head one too many times.

Sorry? Hymns are songs of praise or prayer, sung during religious services.

3x Well that just sucks. I never was in Choir, lucky me. :? It was sung one or twice in Church, decent choir there too. Still fond of the tune. :]

in the garden

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

Refrain

I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Refrain
whatever

Hymns are religious, kind of by definition.

Ride of the Valkyries is opera.

Probably 'Ave Maria' since it can be used for almost any context.
