Should Joseph Stalin be canonized?

Postby FreeLaannds » Sun Jun 05, 2011 7:43 am

This issue is a bit old, but I just wanting to bring this up. About a year ago, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation petition the Orthodox church in St.Petersburg to have Stalin canonized (which means that he will become a saint). During the Second World War, he made a deal with the Orthodox church in which he give them back their power in exchange for backing from the church. The CPRF proposed that Stalin be made a saint if he won the greatest Russian in history poll a few year ago. The poll was instead won by a mediaeval leader named Alexander Nevsky. But should Stalin have been made a saint?
About myself: I was born in the Soviet Union and served in military ('64 to '82). I support the USSR, and am an active member of the Communist Party of Russian Federation.
My younger self, around 1953

No!
I am a communist, but his ways cost too much!
He was cruel, and cruelty was the reason of dissolved USSR from the inside...It's like a concrete dam,it holds HUGE amounts of water pressure(metaphor people),by loosing it up a bit, water will destroy the dam,dam will fall, just like USSR did, loosing the basic of the rule that was tightened for decades...It had to be loosened from the start in order not to fall, but Stalin started tightening up the basic of USSR,than dude after him, next dude after him, than the last one(Gorbachev, capitalist dog by the way) returned to the basic of the USSR(which Stalin tightened in first place),and loosened it up,next thing you know USSR failed...USSR wouldn't fail if they gave those rights to the people right after WWII instead in the late 1980s,they did it too late, when people were sick of poor rights, with those rights given after WWII economy would be constantly reformed because it would be allowed to,and who knows there maybe wouldn't be a Berlin wall and cold war, which started because of Stalins paranoia...
WWII victory?
If Stalin didn't existed,it's 50% less possibility that WWII would start in the first place(war between USSR and Germany)
Because half of the puzzle wouldn't be there, other part of the puzzle was Hitler who had reasons of attacking USSR,and those reasons were Finland and Poland which Stalin attacked,Hitler saw how poorly trained red army was,and yet he knew of Stalins "cleaning" of most experienced generals and other top officials of red army,he knew that red army had unexperienced generals...
So if there wasn't for Stalin, there wouldn't be winter war,Polish war, cleansing of top officials of the red army, and by that fact that there is no Stalin there wouldn't be exposer of Soviet weaknesses which gave idea to Hitler,"USSR is weak, let's conquer it."
Why do you think Stalin signed non-aggression pact with Germany in the first place?
POWER TO THE SOVIETS,NOT THE PARTY!!!

No. There are better ways to go about serving God than repressing religion and killing millions of people.

Or putting his corpse in front of a cannon and shooting. The Mughal style of execution.

Can we canonize Hitler as well?

Wouldn't be the first saint that slaughtered millions.

Great idea! I'll call up the Dali Lama now. All religions need a bit of humor about themselves.

I thought it's only two, now.

1 to be beatified, and the second to be canonised.

Yeah, the church should dig his mega-anti-religion views. Facepalm.

In the Catholic Church. I'm unfamiliar with the Patriarchate of Moscow's canonisation processes.

I literally sold my wife on the idea that the Catholic Church did this on Cannonization (yes, the spelling "error" was intentional.) Despite that I am a well-known liar, she believed that they stuffed holy corpses into cannons, and shot them. "But why?" she asked. Naturally: "Well... ummm... to get them closer to Heaven, for the brief moment their body is in the air." (/making shit up completely) Her response: "Huh... what did they do with the bodies once they landed?" Well... this one is easy "See, they shoot the bodies into the ocean." ... ... "Oh."

That was probably the hardest straight face I've ever kept.

Making millions of people cease to exist, creating the illusion that a poor, weak nation is a superpower (even though *everyone* knows now that the Soviet economy and military were merely overhyped by the military industrial complex to justify a massive military), and to get idiotic people the world over to continue to virtually worship him, despite being a bumbling moron, a tyrant, and for ordering all of the churches burned down, the priests shot, and the faithful sent to forced labour camps. He did bring the church back during world war two as part of his efforts to revive patriotism, but they were subsequently repressed after the end of the war.

I remember while I was in Russia there was a huge cathedral about half a mile from the Kremlin. It had just been rebuilt because during Stalin's rule he had ostensibly claimed that it "blocked his view", and thus it was torn down and turned into a swimming pool. The story is amusing, but very true.

Heres a website dedicated to that church, in case you're curious about it: http://members.tripod.com/rossiya_david/id21.htm
